A small concern

A UTH should cover roughly one third of the floor area to allow for a proper heat gradient, so around 12"x6" should do the trick.

 Sorry bitsy, but 12" x 6" is only 1/9th of the floor space in a 36" x 18" tank

A 12" x 12" or 12" x 18" heat mat would be about the right size :)

So I went to Petland today and asked to be shown the under tank heaters. To which i was pretty much told I was stupid for wanting one and that corn snakes don't need them and that my light should be fine. And when I said "that's lovely, but I want an under tank heater" I was pretty much treated like a complete idiot who didn't know what I was talking about. I proceeded to leave.

Maybe I will try again tomorrow.

You should had given the sales person a dirty look and proceeded to buy the UTH. Many pet stores just know how to keep animals ALIVE until they are sold without the concern of giving them the BEST LIFE possible while they are there... :awcrap:

You might also check out the online herp suppliers. They won't call you stupid, and they have great selections at reasonable prices. The bad thing about shopping this way - for me - is that I also find so many other cool things I want, and spend extra money.... :)

Can I make a suggestion that if you chose to purchase a UTH, instead of sticking the heater to the tank itself, get a piece of flooring tile ( preferably ceramic ) and stick it to the tile to help distribute the heat.. Unfortunenatly I have dealt with folks at the Regina Petland before.. * Yeah I live in California but for some reason I still consider the Moose Jaw area home, who knows why but.....

Anyways, don't be put off by the people that work there.. Come around here more often and then you can start teaching thier employees new things...

Regards... Tim of T and J

That's a good suggestion. I ended up using a heating pad (like the kind you put in your tummy when you're cold, haha) underneith the viv. Works like a charm, has a temp control, keeps the warm side at a good 84 F. I have a thermometer probe on the glass right above it (on the floor of the viv).

Are you from the Regina/ Moose Jaw area, or do you just randomly show up here? If you come up a lot, it would be a great oppertunity to buy a hatchling in a few years ;)

IS IT NECESSARY TO PUT CORNS THROUGH BRUMATION? i HAVE 2 WHO HAVE BEEN HAPPILY LIVING TOGETHER FOR OVER A YEAR (i JUST GOT THEM 6 MONTHS AGO THOUGH). i HAVE THEM IN A 65 GALLON VIV. iF THEY DO NEED TO GO THOUGH BRUMATION WHAT DO i NEED TO DO? THANKS

watch your heating pad, they are not ment to be on 24/7 so may die within a couple of weeks(yes from experience since mine died 2 weeks ago and it took me a couple of days to notice)

it's much cheaper to buy online then to buy from the pet stores in sask(and most other provinces)

there is a couple of places that have pretty decent shipping to canada, i buy all my supplies online and have them shipped to me(nipawin area) as i can purchase 2x the supplies and still have spent less then buying the basics in stores.

I don't have it on all the time. It is hooked on to a thermostat and only turns on when the temp drops too low. And it turns off after the temp gets to a certain point.
