A way, way, much to thin rescue.

As long as the water is available and fresh, don't worry about it if you don't see him drink. Sometimes after I feed my snakes, I will lower them into their tanks right above their water bowl and they almost always have a big drink then.

Yes. Provide hides. You don't want to stress him out. And without hides, he might feel like he has to move, could cause bad digestion. In the wild snakes hide. It helps them feel safe.

And as for feeding. I would say that's more than enough yo sustain him for a couple weeks. Snakes are resilient... with regards to food anyway. I think a fuzzy a week.... if you want though....just up the days.... like every 4 or 5 days.... then I would move to 2 fuzzie then weanlings and keep him on that for a couple months to gain some weight. Then move up as you see fit.

But try to feed a bit more often. Every 5 or 6. He seems like he eats... so... doesn't seem like it will be an issue. BTW...
I had my snake for almost a year before I SAW her drink, they are like ninjas with drinking

^^^^^^^True!!! I have a couple I have never seen drink, but they always pay their tab and leave a nice tip.

He looks like he will be just fine! You did a good job with him.

I think he doesn't look too bad either, and slow weight gain is better than trying to fatten him up too fast.

This is Ankh, I rescued him on February 22nd from a guy that was afraid of him, fed him a fuzzy (or sometimes two) every "2 or 3 weeks." Or whenever he remember. He hadn't been handled, he didn't have a hide, I have no idea if he had a heat source (I didn't see a lamp, and didn't ask if he had a heat mat). At least he did have a huge water bin, but he only had a very small piece of bogwood (that stuff you can get at pet stores, can't recall its real name right now).

He was 561 grams and 3.5 feet in length. His spine stands out really bad in that photo. As of Saturday, he is 618 grams. I am feeting one adult mouse every week, and once he is closer to proper weight, I'll move it to ten days, and then figure out a maintenance schedule for him. I figure he has a couple hundred grams to go before he looks plump- like a bread loaf- like my snow, Udjat.

Grats on rescuing him, he's in a much better place and will be a much happier snake!

For the record, I started straight with adult mice instead of working up from smaller ones. I use tongs to dangle it by the tail and wiggle it, move it around a bit so he has to follow, strike, and coil. I figure it's some good psychological stimulation to let him "hunt" without using live prey.

A digital scale will definitely help you see how his weight gain proceeds. I have mine set to grams instead of ounces because it's more sensitive, but a digital should also give you fractions of ounces if you prefer that. I keep all my snakes' weights, feedings, etc charted so I can see over time how they grow.

Weigh them just before you feed for the most accurate measurement. That way they've already gone to the toilet and you're not getting the digested mouse weight mixed with snake weight. Different points in digestion and excretion can make big differences in weight, so right before a feed, or 4-5 days after feed is most accurate because the bowels have the least amount of matter in them.

I also never see my snakes except Udjat drink, and even then it's not very often I catch him. You can put some silk vines around the water dish to give him cover so he feels more safe getting a drink if you're worried about it.

Thanks for clarifying that I shouldn't feed two fuzzies at a time. You probably saved me money. And him and I both stress.

That is such a thin snake. Poor baby. I'm so glad you got him though. He's definitely hit the jackpot. And his colors are gorgeous. Congratulations on your rescue as well!

Sarpe isn't as shaky as he was. He liked being handled even when he was, but now he's really just perfect with being held. It's awesome. He's just so sweet and lovely and I'm just so happy to have him. Thanks again, everyone, for all the help. It's been such a great help and relief. I still nearly died when I saw him drink though. Haha.

It's amazing that you guys have so many snakes. Are you always anxious? What is your secret?

And sorry, one more thing. How long should this shaky thing stick around? I understand it will take a bit to get him stable. Just wandering when it crosses from being normal to being a concern.

Smigon geez lots of pets you have

Sigh, I know, and I have to take Snow off the board since she passed a few weeks ago. Give me another week to just see her name and I will update.

But I can proudly say that only one is a "purchased" pet (Scarlett), the rest were all rescues or adoptions! Or I stole them off the reservation ("stole" is such an ugly word, "willingly agreed to come along" sounds so much better). But that was just one skinny cat, and how was I to KNOW she was pregnant when I took her and we would end up keeping two of her kittens???

Now you have me thinking, I also have three cats buried in the backyard next to 4 dwarf hamsters and 2 rescued corn snakes. 20 pets in 10 years at this house!

Your descriptions always crack me up!

Trust me, I think nearly every one of us (or anyone with a heart) was just like you with their first snake! I still ask questions here, I am a newbie, I started with one from a local breeder 1.5 years ago, and started hearing and seeing snakes that were in bad living conditions or being sold on Craigslist because the owners didn't want them anymore. I started "rescuing" them, giving them the living conditions they didn't have before, and with each new one I get that "new baby" thrill over and over.

The anxiety will wear off (hard liquor helps :bird:) in time, once you are comfortable and know that he is fine and happy. It was when spring came around that I got anxious this year, I don't know what it was but it seemed many corns were acting funny, even ones that had never behaved like it before.

And maybe I missed it, but what "shaky thing" do you mean?

Alright. I tried directly replying to that, but apparently it didn't want to cooperate.

He has a slight shake when you pick him up. His head and neck sort of wobble when he lifts them. It's gotten less severe over the past few days, but it's still noticeable. I don't know it's because he's a bit thin, or because he's only starting to build some muscle tone. Has anyone experienced this with any neglected rescues?

Wow.
I remeber my first pets that were really my own. Degus. Bought two. Later had ten.
Kept 7.

Finally managed to sell the lot of them. I had always more liked reptiles. pets of the furry kind dont really do much for me. Give me scales.... I want a bearded dragon, But they eat Crickets, and lots, and so I dont want crickets in my house... i hate bugs. I would survive if I lived near a pet store... but... I would need to buy like... hundreds at a time here.... and have them in my house....And bugs scare the poop out of me. Animals, I am fine, But a ladybug landed on me today and I right freak out. You should see when I come face to face with the giant Japanese Poisoness and agressive wasps that are the size of my thumb....Anyways... I am ranting.

Man, I wish there were more girls that liked snakes (not just could tolerate) but actually liked them

Yes, he probably needs to build up muscle tone. "Exercise" him by letting him slither from hand to hand, like a treadmill, and keep him on the right diet and he will most likely be great in no time!

I was thinking about this, I wonder what the ratio of men to women is in registration on this site. I know there are a LOT of women here, I know 4 in Phoenix alone. Oh, make that 3, SOMEBODY (Olivia) ditched us for cooler weather!!! :sidestep:

Yea. Maybe a lot In this site...but I feel slot are in a different age range...Lol. let's start a new section....dating....Hahahaha.
Nah but seriously, one of the first thing I tell girls is I have pet snakes. The girls look shocked and scared, and the conversation usually ends sometime soon after
