What are the chances of my snake getting mites if I put it on the ground or on a tree/bush to take pictures?

I wouldn't think the chances would be very much. Have you seen Susan's pictures? She is the QUEEN of outdoor shots! If there was much of a chance of mites, I'm sure she wouldn't be doing it. :)

Thanks for the compliment Jen! :)

Nothing is 100% in this world, but I take most of my outdoor pics on 1 tree in my front yard. It has smooth bark and I do wipe the main branches I use down with a mild bleach solution and rinse very well before each photo session...and the sun dries it very quickly. The tree loves the watering and the small amount of bleach hasn't hurt it in any way. Due to it's location, I've never seen another critter on it except for the occasional insect and, of course, bees and humminbirds love the flowers. Any other tree, bush or flower I've used is thoroughly examined before being used. And I don't let my snakes make it to the ground (except on the rare occasion when they are fast and I've been distracted by one of my children). And a note of caution...use a tree whose highest branches are still within reach...snakes will go up as well as down!

And it's often more difficult getting a snake OFF the tree!

Thanks for the advise susan!
I don't have any smooth barked trees in my yard so I'm thinking about getting a prop branch, one that I can keep in the house and stick in the bath tub for cleanings lol.

If I take outside pics I usually just hold the snake . . . however I did get some nice shots of my ghosts on paper towels out in the sun the other day. I had them in a tub to slow them down if they tried to make an escape - LOL. There was no way I was even going to try that w/my crimson, Petunia tho. That one is as nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs!!! When she settles down she's nice as can be, so I am hoping after she gets used to us she'll be okay. Anyway . . . I like your idea of a prop branch for pics - I might have to think about that. I love taking outdoor pics, the sun catches their color sooooooo well.

what do you do to get them off the branch if they are all intangled like that, without them squirming up the tree.

I'm not too concerned about them squirming up the tree since I can easily reach the upper-most branches still. The "fun" part with that particular "viper" was getting bitten (she was not very happy about leaving the tree). When entangled, it's just a matter of getting one end of the snake and "unwrapping". It can be a project when you're working on unwrapping one half and the other half is trying to wrap again. That's when 3 hands can come in handy!

You're welcome Susan, I LOVE your pics! And I have to agree, once they get in the tree, they're not happy to leave. I was going to comment on the p'd off look of that "viper" too LOL. Did he tag you?
