Ok, so my new snake Sam was an absolute doll in store. I held him and he was so calm, just riding around on my hands and arms and didn't want to leave me to go back into his tank. I've gotten him home and let him settle in, and put my hand in his cage a day before I fed him and he struck me. I figured he was just hungry and fed him the next day. He ate like a champ. It's been a day and a half, and I put my hand into his cage and he has struck towards me 2 or 3 times.
What is going on with this lil guy? He seemed so sweet in store and now he's this crazy hateling. Is there anything I can do to help him calm down? Should I give him some more time before I try to handle him?
 
I would guess Sam is a hateling. So is Attitude. She is getting better with consistent handling despite the bites, and it hardly hurts, so I just ignore the strikes & the bites & handle her anyway. Good luck.
 
More time for sure always wait 2-3 before handling to avoid regurges. Also, hachlings can be nippy especially when you put your warm hand in their cage like prey. Try scooping him up in a few days most stop striking once out of the cae:)
 
If I didn't know any better, I'd swear my little hateling wanted out? He was at the end of the tank closest to me doing zig zags right in front of me butting his head at the glass and then he attempted to climb up the tank .... wtf? So, I went in and scooped him up and took him out for like 2 minutes and he totally behaved himself. What a lil weirdo. I put him back in his tank and he totally went into "i'm gonna strike you" mode with his lil S curve and his body upright. Now he's back in hiding. What a lil personality!
 
They're territorial. Their tank is their territory. You sticking your hand in is trespassing in it, and they sometimes feel a need to defend it. Once they're out of their territory, they usually became calm.

Great, guard corns.. Never mind my pitbull... What are we going to get next for home security.. ???

All they see is the hugh blob moving around them.. Natural intinct is to become agressive in hopes they are left alone, darn little fakers, and sometimes it is really entertaining them striking their definsive pose trying to look fierce while trying to make their heads appear viper shaped.. The instinct is fight or flight, if they can't leave the area, they fight..

I hope so, I have a ghost and a plasma who are both terrible. The plasma has been a biter since I first got him (so probably no hope there) but the ghost only developed the super aggressive striking in the last few months. Any ideas why? I tried handling them extra but I have to admit I got tired of being bitten all the time and would rather handle my nice snakes :)
 
Basic check list:

Tempts best for the corn?
Size if bin/viv
Enough hides?
Set the lil one settle in to the new home
Gentle handling and over time, should come around
Try not feeding the snake it its home

Just a few thoughts.

I guess I'm lucky because out of all 6 of my snakes none of them are aggressive :p I am NOT looking forward to getting any hatelings any time soon either ><
 
it could be that the lil guy/gal isnt used to its new home yet also. I have been having to get a new snake used to be as well that for the past month was passed around from owner to owner so he has reason to be a lil turd. Time and patience is key here.
 
Thanks everyone. I picked up Sam today for a few minutes and I got struck 4 times! What a crazy little hateling. Even though it doesn't hurt, it is a bit startling. I hope that he will calm down in time. It seems like he's awesome when he comes out on his terms. As soon as I find him in his aspen and take him out then he's pissed. But if he comes out and is climbing trying to get out, and I take him out then he's all lovey... what a crazy personality!
 
That is an awesome picture! That sucks he is giving you a rough time. Just don't give up, and he will learn who is boss lol.
 
I would think your not going to have a feeding issue with it though! Thats a positive side of the little twits that want to strike and eat you!

OOooo, he looks ferocious!

Well, this thread prompted me to have another go with my 2 biters. I haven't handled them in a month or so, but decided to try it again to see if they were any better. They were still striking in their bin, but once I got them out, they were a lot better! The ghost calmed down and just explored, the plasma tensed up a few times when I would move my hand, but didn't actually strike (which is an improvement - he used to bite several times as I held him). I decided to weigh him, and he did get snippy when I went to pick him up out of the bowl, soooo, it seems to be the picking up part, but once he is in my hands he seems to be better. The point of this long-winded ramble? There is hope for your hateling! Now that I think of it, my sunkissed was quite the biter when I first got him, and he is settling down nicely, too.
 
Oh yay! I"m glad you're having success Nichole. I'm going to handle sammy anyways. He'll have to get used to it. Maybe he's still hungry. He's only 16 grams, so just enough to be feeding double pinks but I didn't see a bump for very long. Its supposed to last 48 hours or so right? So, what should I do? Feed him double pinks again, or try a fuzzie?
