Algae in Turtle tank??

Penman6668

Dr. Jan Itor
I have algae in my Red Eared Sliders tank. I have wiped it out, bought a pleco... (it was eaten) and bought a mystery snail (it was also eaten). It keeps coming back. Yes I understand how and why it grows so I am not surprised that it is growing.
What I was wondering is how other deal with the problem? The turtles do not seem to care about the minnows or the cory cat that in the tank with them. They just do not like the things I get to help with the algae.

Any suggestions are helpful?

P.S. If this is not written well or understandable, my daughter decided to spray a whole bottle of perfume in the house and my head is killing me. Yes a whole bottle.

Regular water changes!!!! I use a razor scrapper in my tank. Anything I Would add to my tank would be eaten.

i don't have any knowledge on the subject, so I can't be of any help..... I just wanted to say,

a whole BOTTLE???
Ouch.
That is one of the more unfortunate things i've heard this week- good luck getting the smell out!

The magnet scrapers make it not such a hassle to keep up with...Maybe a _big_ pleco?

It was a bottle of Love's Baby Soft.

I can't remember what it is called but I used to use an additive in my turtle tank. Lessen the amount of light to curb it also. Are you using any type of filtration? How often do you change the water?

I change the water every saturday. I change about 85% of the water because there are a couple of minnows in the tank so I do not do a complete water change. I will admit I have skipped a week here or there.

I am using a Zoo Med Turtle Clean Filter 318. It is sort of like a inside the tank power filter.

Algae Stoppers

I can answer this one. You can pick up a product called Phos-X or Green-X (same thing far as the packages read) which block the phospate and nitrites in the water. This starves the algae. They are most effective when put into your filter cartridge area, but Phos-X also works sitting free on the bottom of the tank (just not as long lasting or effective that way). Limit light exposure from 8 or less. Since turtles need a basking light there is the red bulbs which could help with that. Are you adding any turtle water cleaner or Cycle products to your water? These add benificial bacteria to your tank which help break down wastes faster.
