Hello i have a question i normally give me baby corn snake frozen pinkies i thaw them out then put three slits in the back and one vertical and she eats them. But i was wondering there is a store near me that only sells live ones, can i give her a live one to eat after ive been giving her frozen pinkies for awhile? Will she know what to do in order to kill it?

Matt

She probably won't kill it- just eat it alive. They usually know not to waste the effort on mice too small to harm them. Or she may be so overjoyed at having a wiggler that she completely coils it!

I have fed live pinkies before due to having a few difficult eaters in my home. I didn't much enjoy the process, so I just walked away for a moment or two while the little guy did his thing. (that being said, never leave an older live mouse alone with your snake)

If you can feed f/t that is the route I would go.

Have to say, feeding live pinkies can be unpleasant because as Nanci says, they don't tend to bother killing it themselves before swallowing. I've tried it with problem feeders and a couple of them went down butt-first without being constricted... That squealing is not a sound I care to hear again.

Aside from that aspect, feeding live is OK with pinkies, but if the Corn develops a preference for live you could be in trouble later. Feeding larger mice live (with developed teeth & the ability to bite) is a risk to the Corn.

If your only source is live, then I'd go with Jcapicy's suggestion and kill them yourself before offering them.
