Am I feeding him enough?

cornycorn

I have a two year old corn that is around 3 feet long. Yesterday was the first day I fed him and I gave him two 5 gram pinkies. He ate them fine. I put a third one in and he didn't eat it, but he knew it was there. Anyways afterwards he started looking around the area where I had put the third one. Is he still hungry. Is 10g of food a week enough for a 2003 good sized snake? Should up the size and if so by how much?

Thanks.

My 2003 snakes are on small adult mice. I'd say that your corn could handle a hopper easily and probably a small adult mouse. If you want to stick to rats it should be able to take a rat pup as well (I assume you meant rat pinky and not mouse pinky). I'd definately get that guy on more food weekly - not enough to make him fat but enough to keep him growing IMO.

A 3ft long snake on 2 pinkies? if that right, then no, s/he should be on small mice, maybee even a snall medium mouse. My 18 month old corn is 36 inches shed size and eats 1 small mouse every 6 or 7 days, he's almost ready for a small medium mouse.

I would seriousley get a small mouse and see how it goes from there.

OK, just to be clear I just got him so he hasn't been eating this little forever, I kind of made it sound like that.

The sizes are weird at my pet store and they jump from 5g to 50g so I wasn't so sure. I just thought it was weird how he didn't want the third one. Anyways I'll move him up for sure then. Would it be okay to refeed him only a day after he ate those two small mice?

Stay on you regular schedule. There is no need to change things in the middle of the stream. :)

My 03 Okeetee, who is about 30 or 32 inches, eats a full size adult mouse (at least medium size) about once a week, or sometimes a rat fuzzy. When I got him, he was about 24 inches and eating hoppers. My 2 most 'baby' snakes (still about 16 to 20 inches) have been eating fuzzies for a while now. I would guess your 36 inch snake could handle about 6 to 10 pinkies, but that wouldn't be the recommended diet, obviously. Pinkies are like baby food, and the sooner you can get away from them and onto more 'nutritionally complete' food (i.e. fuzzies or larger), the better off you'll be.

I'm with cav on this, but i would feed again on Saturday, then once a week from then on so you know s/he has a regular feeding day (or sunday if its easier for you, but not before Saturday). Thats what i would do anyway so you both can get into a routine.
Also (how i planned mine out) if your away for the weekend and feed on a sat usually, you can always feed Early on the Friday, or if you feed on a sunday, s/he can always wait till the Monday, but this only works for weekends away, and should not be a regular thing (i do it approx every 6-8 weeks, depending on where business takes me).

is there a general feeding rule ? like the mice are as thick as the snake, but how often/how many for what size/age, or do snakes vary in their eatin habits (skiny snakes and fat snakes, like people, hehe)

General rule is the prey item should be 1 to 1.5 times the size of the largest area of the snake.... Usually when I'm going to bump up the size of the prey I feed a few of the current size to get him ready for a larger meal.

I go to 2 of the same size for 5 feedings before going onto the next size up, this way i can spot any potential problems (regurges, etc) before i move up a size(this usually doesn't happen, unless the snake itself can't handle a bigger size). Also i move them up a Day in feeding, IE from 5 days to 6 days when moving from 1 fuzzie to 2 fuzzies/1small mouse and so on through the size range.
