Well, my boyfriend and I were sort of forced into staying in our 2 bedroom apartment for another year starting this month. We are most likely going to turn our spare room into a reptile room. I have Tyras, and my boyfriend has his chameleon which I am calling No Name Lady for right now. I want to get a rack setup for when I want to start breeding, or possibly get two eligible adults and start next year. I'm looking for suggestions for the hatchling rack system. I've looked up a lot of different sites for premade ones, which end up costing 300 plus dollars that I don't really have right now. Does anyone know a cheaper site or any home fabricated ideas? I'm not very familiar to flexwatt so maybe something without it? I'm looking for racks with views into the tanks for the adults as well. Any help is appreciated!

Personally, I think it's best to head to the nearest WalMart and look for one of their cheaper cabinet/shelving systems. I picked one up for about $27. It's also quite simple to just use Ziploc sandwich containers for the hatchlings. Ask the deli manager at your local supermarket if they have small disposable ramekins (condiment containers) that you might be able to buy off of them (one oz or two will work just fine). Or you can order them online. Personally, I don't use any heaters (except the ones in my rack), because my reptile room stays at a nice, comfortable temperature for all of it's occupants. The only tank I have a UTH on is my boa, who likes it a little bit warmer. Anything that likes it cooler is a bit closer to the air conditioning vent to keep it at a nice temperature for them.

Sorry for the long post, and getting a bit off topic at the end. I just wanted to explain a bit how my "heaterless" room works.

EDIT: My personal "heaterless" does not work for everyone. However, I do feel that is a bit safer due to less technology that can fail unexpectedly. If you do decide to go heaterless with multiple snakes, observe their behaviors, and adjust temperatures/tank/tub/rack locations accordingly.

I get what you are saying about the heatless. I have just moved Tyras and my boyfriends unnamed chameleon into their own room since my roommates recently vacated. I have the heat up even though they both have heat sources. Its just easier to keep the air temp up that way too. I'm just weary about winter. I do live in Upstate New York, so it gets pretty darn cold. Normally, we don't have to turn on our heat in the apartment because we live above a tanning salon. :D I'll just have to watch it and see.

For the Walmart shelving, do you mean the plastic drawer ones? I feel like a hatchling could easily get through those. Do you reinforce them with anything, or do you just use the tupperware containers? When I think of ramekins, I can't picture the disposable ones. I just see the ceramic old granny cooking ones. Hah.

Bahahaha! Did you click the link for the ones I posted? Their pretty awesome for hatchlings. I think you can also get them from this, or larger. That way, you have places to stack whatever little tubs you decide to use.

Oh jeeze. Can you tell I'm tired?! I feel like those are tinyyyyyy. When I copy the link from your "this" it takes me to a picture I posted... o_O

I think my night is going to be spend googling the plastic drawer things. Hooray for insomnia! I have a bunch of tupperware, so I think I can spare a few or more. Not to mention I have a full box yet to be opened.

I definitely wouldn't recommend any of the plastic drawer things from WalMart, because hatchlings can get out WAY too easily. I use one of the larger bookshelf things, and it works wonderfully for my tanks and tubs. :)

Ohhhh. Like the cheapy woodish ones? I was thinking about using those for the glass vivs, then realizes they are a tiny bit too narrow for 20 longs.

Thank you soooo much! :D

Yeah, they are a bit small for that, but they fit a 10 gallon, and a couple of hatchling tubs quite nicely!

And you're quite welcome. Don't forget to post pictures of your finished setup!

Oh, pictures will come for sure. I just have to figure out when I will be doing this. I have said in a few other posts that I am looking for a few adult corns to breed, so if that pans out I will have it set up soon. If not, eventually.

Brionuhh,

Here is a rack I built from a Wal-Mart Shelf Unit. I keep it in the back of my walk-in closet. It has flex-a-watt on all the shelves except for the top. On top is a Zilla 20 gallon long with a Zoo-Med Heat Pad on the bottom of it. I use tubs with lids so I don't have to worry about keeping the shelf spacing real close. Holds many different types and sizes of tubs with no problem!

Just throwing some ideas out there.....

That looks like the shorter, wider bookshelf. That was what I planned on doing, but with the taller, more narrow shelf. I just don't have experience with flexwatt, and I'm sort of afraid to use it. :/

I've heard good things about that and the heat cables, which don't require the um.. expertise? that flexwatt seems to need. I'm also intimidated by the flexwatt to be honest. I'm going to be picking up some of the heat cable from amazon I think when I get paid.

Robbie, The instruction sheet says "Ridgewood 89315WY" It is 29-1/2" wide, 32" tall, 11-1/2 deep. I think they were on sale for under $20.00 so I bought two of them and used one of the shelves from the second one on the one in the picture. They had them in white, black, or oak.

Thank you kindly, sir! I'll take a peek around at my local store and see what I can find. :)

Another option is to look around when you're driving, sometimes people have dressers that have a broken drawer or something on the lawn for free. Take out the drawers, put in some wood for shelves, quick and easy rack!

Was at Wal-Mart this morning and saw them for $15.84. Brand was Mainstays... I think.
