Anybody flown recently with a dog?

Just as the title says. Will be needing to take a family member their 3 pound poodle to them and will more than likely be flying. I've looked into bringing a dog on board a bit but wondered if anyone here had done it fairly recently and might have some advice. Thanks for any replies!

A three pound poodle should be no problem...thats smaller than most people's carry-ons! I've seen many small dogs on flights and there doesn't seem to ever be a problem. Just be sure to check with the airline first and have everything set-up at least a week before the flight!

This summer I had a dog shipped to me (via cargo across the country) and later shipped back. There were no problems and the overall process was very simple.

(*Just wanted to add the dog shipped to me was a 40 pound adult that I was pet-sitting. I would never purchase a dog online and ship it to me, as the above may appear to imply).

The most experience anyone in my family has had, was my Aunt just recently adopted a older Yorkie cross puppy from some rescue in California that had originally come from a puppy mill and she was shipped cargo to the Aunt in Washington. She did okay with it. I've looked into carry on several times in the last few years for taking my own Chihuahua on trips, she's a great traveler and would probably do well with it. It didn't seem to be that complicated. But I just heard from another family member that I will need a vet signed certificate that she is healthy. Does anyone know if that's true? Not a problem if so but makes me a bit worried because that wasn't mentioned anywhere and makes me wonder what other rules and requirements there might be that are not obviously listed on the airlines' websites. Still have a lot of time to research it but it's nice to hear first hand experiences.

Yes she will most like need a vet certificate. Call the Airline and they will tell you everthing that you need to do. I think it was any dog under 20 pounds are carry on.

With my husband being in the Army and us being stationed overseas twice, we shipped both of our dogs to and from the states mulitple times! Those those were 80 and 120 lbs - so they didn't go in the cabin with us =)
Yes, you will need to show a vet certificate that the dog is fit for traveling and healthy. You shouldn't give your dog any food the morning off the flight and make sure he has had a #2 on the last potty run you go on prior to boarding the flight. Make sure he has water available.
Some people prefer their dogs being sedated a little for the flight, but sometimes sedatives in combination to the stress they are going through can cause sever issues with their heartrate, so I would try to go without.
The airlines all have different regulations about pets on the plane, so make sure you get informed before flying. As far as I know (!) there is a flatrate cost if you fly with pet, which is $150, no matter the size or weight of your pet. I paid that coming from Germany for both my 80lbs dog and my 10 lbs cat. Which is a BIG improvement to the $1200 I paid to ship two big dogs to South Carolina a couple years prior! LOL. But that was on an international flight, I'm not sure if stateside flights are cheaper.

GL!

Thanks for the replies! Not sure which airline I'll be flying yet, so I'll have to wait a bit longer to contact them and get all the info they have. The family member will be buying my ticket. It was a few years ago but one of the airlines was offering carry on of any dog small enough to fit on your lap for a flat rate of $49. Think it was Southwest? That was only for national flights though.
