Hi guys,

I think my old foster is in an animal control right now! I can't believe it, and if it's her I will be no doubt driving down 7 hrs (each way) to pick her up. I can't be there until this weekend...but I also need confirmation that it's indeed her. So I am looking for any generous person who lives near Athol, Massachusetts. I would be so grateful if anyone to just go to the shelter, compare a couple pictures and let me know. Please respond or pm and I'll include more details.

If this works out- you'll all get a post of me in tears & and a very happy dog! ;)

Not me--I'm far, far away, but I would suggest you call the shelter and let them know you're coming. If it's not a no-kill shelter, there's no way of saying if she'd even be there this weekend when you show up if you don't call ahead and let them know you think it's your dog but can't get away 'til the weekend....

Thanks Irish eyes! I have called multiple times, left a message and emailed. Hope this works out! :)

What part of Massachusetts is Athol in? I'm in MA, but I work, I couldn't go before Saturday.

Thank you all!

I am driving down at noon today because the shelter staff thinks its a match! Wish me luck, this is a very unexpected roadtrip, but I would do absolutely anything for that darn dog! ;)

Hey guys...thought you all deserved an update in this crazy situation! Drove 7 hours Friday night...went to the animal control....and there was my dog!!! She is in rough shape, very skinny, but still remembered her spot on the couch! I am beyond thrilled to have her back!

It's a crazy twist of fate because early last week I had emailed her original owner asking whatever happened to her....loved that dog SO much that I couldn't just get her out of my head for a whole year! The owner responded that she was in happily placed in a home 1 hr away. She also told me the dog was a basenji mix, not a whippet mix, like we had all thought before. Well for some crazy reason I decided to do a petfinder search that morning. I don't even know why I did it, I just though maybe perhaps I could find a dog just like her to adopt. Well the first result that popped up was a picture with an uncanny similarity in the Athol animal control (which is 1 hr from my family in Mass or her supposed new home)! I called, sent photos, and they said it looked that a match! And now you all know the happy ending...she's fit perfect back into our lives! I arrived back in Canada tonight and I'm never letting her go! :p

I wanted to add that the animal control is run by only 2 women who are amazing, incredible people who work way too many hours to look after way too many homeless pets! I am forever thankful to them. If anyone is looking for a place to donate for the holiday season, please consider the Athol Animal Control. It is one place that could really use the help and puts the money to good use! :)

Their address is: (to mail donations) :)

Just to make sure I have the story straight. You were fostering this dog, it went to some other people & then they told you that it had been placed?
Glad this story had a happy ending!

Yes- which is why the story is so unbelievable!

I fostered/pet-sat Phoebe last Christmas for two weeks....fell in love with her, but had to give her back to her owners who weren't quite decided on what to do with her. I had contemplated emailing and asking what happened to her for a long time, but emotionally couldn't do it. But somehow last week I found the courage to and that when I received the news that she had been happily placed. I had no reason to think otherwise, but I'm happy for whatever compelled me to do an internet search for "basenjis" in New England.

This is the photo I saw of "Ruby" when I first made this post asking if anyone lived near Athol could see if this was somehow my "Phoebe".

I compared it to ones I had of her from last christmas like this:

I felt like I absolutely needed to go check it out in person, and am I ever happy I went there! The animal control said she was dropped off as a stray, but believed otherwise since she came with some things and a name. So someone is not telling the truth in this story, but honestly it doesn't matter at this point. The papers are signed, and Phoebe is back in my life! She was honestly the one thing missing in my life that I thought about everyday! :)

Here is a new picture from a couple days ago ... she has some eating to do ;)

Here's a link to the animal control that I feel so indebted to! I can't say how much I admire all their hard work. If anyone else wants to donate or just send them a holiday pet-card I'm sure they would be thrilled to be appreciated! :)

That's the kind of happy ending that will make me smile for days! I'm so glad that Phoebe is finally home--a home that will love and care for her for the rest of her days. Thank you for bringing her home! Lucky, lucky dog!
