Are Corn Snakes Dangerous to Small Dogs?

Hello. I really want a corn snake and I found a really nice looking one that I would like to buy. It is already an adult and full grown to almost 5 feet. I was wondering though if this species of snake will pose any threat to my 3 month old chihuahua. I really don't know much about snakes, especially this species so I'm not sure if it would be a good idea because I really love my dog.

Thanks. :flames:

Nope...you Chihuahua should be just fine. ;) Even though its a small dog...that's still too big of a meal for a corn snake. :D Besides you will have the snake in a vivarium, right?

BTW, welcome to the forums! Make sure to give us some pics when you get your new little one....isn't it exciting getting your first snake?! :crazy01:

As long as you keep them separated there shouldn't be a problem. I don't think a cornsnake would consider a dog to be food, even if it did get out, but if the dog were to grab the snake, I think the snake could hurt or kill it while defending itself. They are strong animals. Keep the snake somewhere away from the dog. Our snakes have never bothered our cats, even when our large (4 1/4 foot) female got out. Just use common sense.

Good luck!

Welcome to the forums. I have a chihuahua and many cornsnakes. I try to keep them away from each other just to reduce stress (on both.) I have had nothing go wrong. If they ever are near one another, they won't even give a second glance. Now my 6 1/2 foot boa is another story.

We have a small Pomeranian, and sometimes when she gets on our nerves, with excessive barking and what have you, we threaten her with becoming a meal for our snake. That seems to quiet her right down. :)

On a serious note though, the two don't even seem to notice each other - sometimes when we're handling the snake the dog will come along and give it a sniff... and then walk away uninterested. The snake doesn't seem to mind the dog either and just ignores her, which i found surprising - i thought the dog would frighten the snake - but if she does, the snake shows no outward appearances of it.

I've never heard of a corn eating a pet dog/cat, and being as they're not a species of snake that grows to be particularly gigantic I wouldn't be overly concerned about it.

Welcome to the forum, and as everyone else has said, things should be fine.

Agreed, i know mine will take chinchilla's redily when he grows up into a 8-12ft adult.

I think it would be about impossible for even a 5 ft. corn to take a chihuaha. They are not particularly thick snakes, and even a young chihuaha would stretch the limits of a corn. The dog however could potentially kill the snake (not really the other way around) so exercise caution especially with puppies who tend to treat all moving objects as toys.

I donno, my creamsicle took on my Great Dane... ;)

They were just playing of course.

Wow, this forum moves really fast. Thanks for all the replies, it put me at ease, but I actually bought the snake before reading them, :grin01: .

I held the snake as I came home so it didn't have to go in that box which I figured would stress him more. He is sweet and docile. When I walked into my house who else but my chihuahua comes barking at the door. The poor snake got so scared he darted trying to find some kind of cover on me. I felt bad, but he is doing awesome now. After holding the snake I am convinced that my dog poses a much greater threat to him, but hes too high for my small dog to reach him anyways so all is good. :crazy02:

Anyways, I wanted to say that post with the great dane and the snake was amazing. I can't believe your dog is so calm. My chihuahua would have torn it apart. That is one cool dog
