Are double fuzzies OK?

Can double fuzzies be used at any point in time?

My fuzzies range from 6-9 grams. My snake is eating 7 gram fuzzies now, and I feel like I could move her to the 8-9 gram fuzzies. After moving her up to 8-9 gram fuzzies, if I don't want to buy hoppers, can I start feeding her a 6-7 gram fuzzy and a 3 gram pinkie? Or progress to two 6-7 gram fuzzies?

I have a lot of 3 gram pinkies left, and more than 30 fuzzies. I'd like to skip out on hoppers, and go from double fuzzies to weanlings. Is this feasible?

Is the length of two fuzzies prohibitive during the hopper phase of a snake's growth? I am a little more conservative than the Munson Plan, and would not want to start on weanlings until after 100-110 grams.

My snake is over 50 grams now (probably over 60, I gotta weigh her this weekend). I think by the end of this year, she'll be close to 100 grams...so I don't see the need in ordering a batch of 25 hoppers if I can get to 100 grams with double fuzzies, or fuzzy + pinkie combos.

My next mouse purcahse would be during the winter, and it would be one batch of weanlings, and one batch of adult mice. That should hold me for another year, when i can start buying just adults. Used up or not, I plan on discarding mice after 1 year in the freezer.

Keeping one snake is hard. Frozen food ordered online seems more suited for people with at least 2-3 snakes of a similar size. I have some VERY small pinkies that are coming up on 7 months old in vacuum bags. I wish I knew someone close by who needed small pinkies :shrugs:

I'm no expert, but I think as long as you aren't overfeeding her by weight/volume, double pinkies/fuzzies/hoppers or a mix is fine. I had some of mine on triple pinkies to get rid of them, or a fuzzy and a pinky, etc. I actually have a few that are probably in the 140g range who I'll be feeding double hoppers to, as I'm apparently a poor predicter of my mouse needs and ordered a lot of hoppers. They just grow faster than I would have thought.

I can't see why double fuzzies would be a problem. As long as the total weight of the meal & the maximum diameter of the fuzzies are OK, it should be fine. In the wild, cornsnakes who find a nest of mouse pinks will eat the whole nest, so I can't imagine why meal made up of smaller pieces wouldn't be OK. People who have kings as trash compactors feed them whatever gets refused, even if that's 5 pinks as a serving, and the kings seem fine with snacky bits.

No problem at all. :) You'll want to move the snake up in prey size because the nutritional value differs from pinks to fuzzies to hoppers to weaned. That said, there's nothing wrong with feeding multiple smaller items. I think most of us do that at some point while using up a bag of frozen mice.

I'm feeding my one year old snake 2 fuzzies at a time because the only pet store close by (which is 30 miles away) only has pinkies, fuzzies, XL adult mice and rats that are frozen. There is another pet store near that one but they only keep live feeders and I don't feed live. But snake doesn't seem any less healthy from it so I think it's fine.

Mine's on double fuzzies because he's big enough for hoppers but I still have a buttload of fuzzies left. :)

I couldn't agree with Westphal more. Double fuzzies are no problem at all. I have several '09 snakes that are eating three large fuzzies every seven days. Most of them aren't quite ready for hoppers quite yet.

As stated, no problem with multiple items. I imagine most people have experienced too many small items left over - that "buttload of fuzzies" Ceduke mentioned.

That said, three large fuzzies would be in the weight range of 21-27 g combined weight. Hoppers run around 9-12 g each. Regular adults are about 24-30 g. If the snake can handle 3 large fuzzies it's more than ready for something bigger.

Great news then.

I thought at some point, doubling or tripling up would create too long of a food chain inside the snake. Seems like the last fuzzy in a trio wouldn't get any stomach acid on it until the first two had dissolved a little better...which could lead to premature decomposition.

Likewise with the trio of mice, the last one in may not even make it to the stomach...instead, it would be partially in the stomach,a nd partially in the pathway to the stomach...

This is all in my head of course...as this is how I envision the inner-working of a snake.

Glad I asked though. I won't be moving up to three fuzzies, but I will go to double fuzzies and skip hoppers...after she is over 110 grams, I'll move her to weanlings, and then onto adults after 200 grams.

Weights are meaningless! It's all about how far a snake can open its mouth. Hoppers are much larger in diameter than fuzzies.

You can feed anything that will fit in the snake up to the recommended weights. Sometimes one of my little bit bigger snakes eats 9 (or more!) pinkies if the hatchlings don't eat em. :D

Actually, the stomach expands outward enough so that the multiple prey items are just kind of stacked/wedged/squished together. It's just like yours or mine in that regard. Your thoughts are logical, but fortunately nature doesn't always make sense. :)

Weights are not meaningless. Yes, hoppers have a larger diameter than do fuzzies. Corns can - and regularly should - take prey item that have a diameter ranging from 1-1.5 times their body's width at its WIDEST point. It's not a bad thing for them to stretch the ligaments around the mouth. It is what they're designed to do. Any corn who can handle 3 large fuzzies digestively would have a mouth large enough to take a hopper.

I enjoyed offering leftover pinks to my king last night. I had five of them, and he took them sideways! :roflmao: So although it isn't his entire diet, he certainly will eat appetizers as a meal. ;)

When my first snake got big enough for peach fuzzies I was still feeding her two pinkies at a time simply because I still had some left over and she did fine like that.
