are we losing our pure cornsnakes?

I was just on a new facebook page called cornsnakes.com I thought it was affiliated with this site. All they are going on about over there are hybrids. Including some breeders selling cornsnakes on Kingsnake that I almost bought from.
Now Im not altogether against hybrids but its scary to not know who to trust.
Are our cornsnakes going to end up like carpet pythons?
Ive been looking forever for a pure jungle carpet that is affordable and its impossible now to find one.

As long as there are corn snakes in the wild, we will never totally "Lose" the pure snake. All these man made concoctions with the unusual colors are just a money making scheme and as long as there are folks who will pay for a grey corn snake or a white corn snake there will always be somebody to create one.

I still think the prettiest corn snakes are the natural ones, unfortunately nobody wants one or the breeders would be making them too.

That facebook site you were on is not a new corn snake site. It is the Facebook site for this site here. A lot of the same folks that post here also post there.

But Why are they passing these obvious mixes as "cornsnakes" and not hybrids. Thats what disturbs me. I mean I am not an expert but I can see the thayeri and the Bairds influence in them. there is no way in heck they are just cornsnakes.

Maybe it's regional but I still see a lot of wild types available at pet stores and on Craigslist. Usually the ones in stores were substitutes for morphs (wholesalers dumping wild types with hidden Hets).

Hybrids are growing in popularity and the blending of species will be called into question with every new morph that is not produced by a respected breeder.

Unless Rich Z changed his mind, he stated a couple of years ago that the Cornsnakes.com Facebook groups are not related to his site.
There are a lot of common people on both. What is surprising is who is active there and not here :shrugs:

So many people use Facebook daily that have never touched a BB-style forum in their life. It's usually pretty easy to tell who those folks are when they do decide to start using a forum, too...they post a million individual topics with pictures of the same snake instead of replying to a single thread. It's adorable.

Something about hybridization makes me feel weirdly uncomfortable. On one hand, there are tons of wild intergrades out there, many of which have probably permeated our captive bred corn population without us even knowing it. On the other hand, somehow I still consider those to still be somewhat "pure" since they happen naturally and many instances of speciation likely came about as a result of those intergrades (e.g. gray banded kingsnakes). But when you have hybrids of species that don't intermingle in the wild, something just feels off for me, like jungle korns and sinacorns (though I have to admit, some of the thayeri and nelson corn crosses I've seen are beautiful).

The pendulum swings... When I first became interested in snakes, back in my teens, hybrids were the DEVIL! No One, and I mean NO ONE, gave any quarter on hybrids. They were HATED.
Now, people are beginning become interested in "designer" snakes and hybrids suddenly have a place in the hobby.
But don't worry, soon enough hybrids will dominate the market and localities will be hard to come by and e pendulum will swing again....

Hmm, how ethical is it for someone to just take the name of this long existing website and then pretend that their FaceBook page is associated with it by using the name of the domain as their group title? I've had to address people on Facebook using my trademarks of "BOI" and "Board Of Inquiry", and I sure as heck hate to have to take on yet another headache perpetrated by someone else in this manner. Seriously, do people think it is perfectly OK do to something of this nature?

I agree and I am not nor ever been a member of any of the Cornsnakes.com Facebook groups. It is unethical.

I HOPE that the members in the Facebook group that are held in high regard in the corn snake community and are members here are just unaware that it is not yours.......

As best I can tell, the guy who set that Facebook group up is Drew Lambeth. He has been a long term member (Drewby07) here since 2006 so it's not like he was unaware of the existence of this website using that domain name. Did he PURPOSELY name that Facebook group CORNSNAKES.COM thinking he could draw away people from this site thinking it was associated with me and this forum? I can't see how it could be an accident that he used that term for his group's name. Seriously, he thinks that this is just OK?

I swear, sometimes I get so sick to death of people. Just kick me in the teeth why don't you.........

I contacted Drew and the cornsnakes.com issue on Facebook has apparently been resolved.

Personally, I despise Facebook. I have an account, but very rarely login to it. I didn't know that a "CornSnake.com" Facebook page even existed, but if I had come across it, I would have assumed it was connected to this forum...
I am glad you were able to resolve this issue.

Me too! I assumed it was affiliated because so many people are on both, and as we've gotten more involved in the social media part of herp education, online time has ended up being dominated by moderating FB and twitter, so it's easier to keep up with stuff there (what they DON'T tell you when your 9 yr old starts a herp education campaign...the parent has to "own" everything, and if you want it to stay kid-safe, you have to moderate with a pretty heavy hand).

They changed the name of the facebook page now. I didnt mean to start any big thing. I dont care for facebook but there are some local pages that I needed to join so had to sign up and I was just cruising around and came across that.I also found some great breeders on facebook that have some outstanding looking cornsnakes.

I honestly think it was just an oversight, a poor choice made that never got pointed out. I highly doubt there was any malicious intent.
