Assembly bill 2862

MooreSnakes

I'm a no-good teenager!
For those of you that live in California, you may not have heard, but the state assembly is considering a bill that among other things would make the sale of herps native to California and the sale of unweaned rodents, even if they are for food, illegal. Here is a link for complete information about this bill and I would hope that California residents could contact their assemblymen about this.

Wow, I live in CA and everything on that bill seems fair except for the 2 things you stated. Hopefully that bill is not passed or else us Californians will have to start breeding our own mice and rats.

I have a question though, I believe corn snakes come from the east and south, but are corns native to CA? And what snakes would be included/excluded if this bill was passed. In other words, what snakes are native to CA.

That is completely ridiculous! Most of those things are common sense and are already enforceable by animal control. If they come in and see that the animals have no food or water, they can do something about it. So, the law really isn't changed in that part. It does not say anything about the "natural or artificial light" (which I am assuming they are considering UVB) for reptiles such as iguanas, but it does for birds. It really is much more important for the lizards than the birds. A cage of one square foot for a guinea pig?!?! The poor thing could not even turn around! It sounds like the bill was written by someone who does not know animals at all. They really should do some more research before writing a bill.
As to native CA snakes, I know that California Kingsnakes and Rosy Boas are native.

There are many kingsnakes native to California as well as the rosy boa, but I think they should reduce it to snakes that have been captured from the wild. I think it just might encourage people to collect snakes from the wild if they are no longer allowed to buy them from a breeder. I guess for feeders we will have to breed our own mice but many snake owners don't own enough snakes to do this without overpopulating themselves. Maybe we can figure out some kind of loophole, so we can get the pinkies without actually buying them, but the pet store owners still get money. Some of the non-official votes here http://www.assembly.ca.gov/acs/acsframeset2text.htm under votes show that this bill has a very good chance of being passed.

Two things: I lived in CA until 1999 and I know it was illegal to buy or sell rosey boas, so they have been illegal awhile. AS for pinkies make a deal with your supplier to buy the little box they put rodents in, buy the box get a pinkie for free. Probably a dumb idea, susan

Ok, I sent an e-mail to the guy that the page said to contact for questions and here is my e-mail and his response.

Jason,

Thanks very much for contacting PIJAC. Please be aware that certain
provisions of this bill, specifically relating to feeder rodents, have been
amended. However, there are still many objectionable provisions that PIJAC
is actively opposing. If you are concerned about the bill, you should
contact legislators representing your district and let them know of your
opposition. For contact information, go to PIJAC's Website at www.pijac.org
and click on PetAlerts for this bill under the Breaking News link.

Subject: Assembly bill 2862

Dear Michael Maddox,

Bill 2862 says that if it is passed, the sale of unweaned rodents would be
prohibited, even if they are feeders. I was wondering how snake keepers were
supposed to feed their younger snakes if we can't buy "pinkies" and
"fuzzies" for our snakes. In California and the rest of the United States,
baby mice are the only commonly sold food for baby snakes. I'm concerned
that reptile keeping may die out in California without proper food to feed
snakes.

Sincerely,
Jason
