ASUS eee pc and other netbooks

I am excited for the future of these things too, especially the massive SSDs.

This will be great for the next year or so, we'll see what direction they take!

that's cool. it's the smaller one (8.9") and is only has a 4 gb ssd. guess it depends on how you're gonna use it. oh and it's running linux. not that there's anything wrong with that. for that price you could just pop in an sd card and be all set!

I think if I was going to college this would be the perfect laptop to take to school, while I kept my desktop at home. you could type your notes and just do your surfing on this laptop. For your hard core stuff, I would use my desktop but for light and easy this is a great machine. SSD hard drives is where the future is at. No more fear of bouncing your hard drive around and causing some damage to it.

For someone like Chris this is a perfect laptop to write his notes and to view his picture, problem though is the limited 4 gb hard drive. its not a permanent place to store your photos.

I'm not looking to process images from, it...just preview and cull bad ones to make room for more. Temporary storage and preview is all I want to do. But...when shooting in RAW format, the image needs to be "processed"...which really just means it needs to be made "readable" by a preview engine like IrfanView, or something similar. RAW files are HUGE...

I just need to know if these little machines can be used for image previewing and temporary storage...I guess that would have been an easier question to ask...:D
Thats better.... LOL
We use ours when we are out, and in come to that.
It allows us to download the images, cull any we don't like, as well as photoshop while there if the mood takes you.
Basically, it does all that the pc does, just quicker.
We only use the ASUS for internet browsing and pics.

4 GB HD? Perhaps for the SSD yeah I went ahead and got the 120 GB HDD and replaced my windows install with the newest incarnation of Ubuntu, Jaunty Jackalope, it has a version especially built for netbooks. I usually take it to work with me. I'm using it mostly to write a novel that I want published.

My two cents....
As mentioned earlier, get some virus protection. Free stuff like AVG is pretty good. SpyBot and Malwarebytes are pretty good for what they check.

I'm one of those guys that likes a large monitor (have two 19in at work - swing!). I also like the full size keyboards. That leaves me out of the laptop/netbook area to a degree.

What I do suggest, if you find the need for a larger keyboard and/or monitor, you can connect your netbook to those components using the netbook (or laptop for that matter) as a desktop PC. For laptops - not sure about the netbooks - they have "docking stations". Plug all the goodies into that device (monitor/keyboard/mouse, etc.) and snap in the laptop. Want to go out for coffee? A quick disconnect and take it with you, leaving all those big devices at home.

ah, yeah, i am very interested in what you guys are all using for antivirus progs. i have the free 60 day norton trial but after that I want something decent that isn't going to slow this down. i've already uninstalled a bunch of bloatware.

opinions? free is good, but i don't mind paying. i want the best & fastest.

i am so happy with this thing. i just watched the simpsons on hulu while eating a pizza. awesome!!!!

i am also looking for ideas on maybe some better, smallish speakers i could hook in to this when i want to watch stuff. ideas?

If you're going to go with a Free anti-virus I suggest Avira. Avira.

I recommend it. i've used it for 4-5 years now and not once have i been infected. I use only three tools for defense...

Avira
CCleaner
Ad-Aware

On windows that's what i use. with the netbook i run ubuntu so antivirus is really not necessary. all i have is my firewall set up and that's it.

I use AVG-Free on our desktop and both laptops... It updates itself and I haven't had any problems with it. It is also significantly smaller and less "obtrusive" than the Nortons I've used.

BUT, I'm no computer expert... LOL.

I haven't installed it on my netbook because my husband stupidly used up two installation codes (dumb butt!!), but I used PC Tools for my Toshiba lap top and for his desk top. It is a bit pricy, but it was the only thing avalible at the time to knock out the 2009 Anti-Virus virus. Had McAfee installed when my husband downloaded the Anti-Virus virus and all McAfee would do is say "you have a virus." Duh!!

So, yeah, PC Tools is 60 bucks, but it will cover up to three computers and it works outstandingly well. So if you end up needing something a little more heavy duty, I recommend it.

Norton or Kaspersky
Webroot
Lavasoft Ad-Aware (Sweden)
CCleaner
So do I. Great minds think alike. I have Kaspersky on my new (post hurricane Gustav) office behemoth, and on my newer 17" HP uber-laptop.
And am impressed.

Runs great on my IBM T61. I only have the miniature 15.4 widescreen screen.

I really did not mean to sound braggish, later I realized the point I was really trying to make is that my new office desktop and new laptop are both 64-bit, which was rather disruptive, at the time...it renders many app's unusable/incompatible. :D
Many have stepped up to the plate to be accommodating, like Norton, Lavasoft, etc. Kaspersky was already there. I also like the little free "Glary Registry Repair 3.0". I shut things down everyday with the superquick free C(rap)Cleaner and the free Glary RR 3.0.
Kind of sweeps the kitchen, so to speak.

I didn't take it braggish. Was just a little tired at the time and I have my res turned real fine like 1680×1050 add that to old eyes. It would be nice to have the bigger screen at times.
