The way you can really tell if it was a regurge is that the smell is the same (but worse) sickly sweet smell that human vomit often has. Once you smell it the first time, you always recognize it again after that. Yuck! Poop just has the usual smell of poop from many animals - the smells are totally different.
I like to suggest giving it by eyedropper, tube, or oral syringe every other day or so for a few days because putting it in water wastes a lot of it. But many people are not comfortable using a tube or eyedropper; if so, then putting it in water and changing it daily is the best way to proceed. Because it is not really a medicine - just a probiotic putting back what should be there anyway - there is not a specific dose. Breeders just use what has worked for them in the past.
