Baby catches Salmonella from Boa

Phoeb

Found this in yesterdays newspaper. Thought I'd post it here.

I like how it's the older brother's fault for not washing his hands...but they are getting rid of the snake. They should get rid of the boy. hmmm

yay, another reason for the general public to hate snakes. salmonella was why my parents wouldn't let me get a turtle, they heard rumors.

If older bro isn't washing his hands after touching his pet snake, what else is he not washing his hands for??

It's always the reptiles fault... and oh yeah, for good measure, the pet store too. God forbid ANYONE do any actual research prior to purchasing an animal... that would be far too responsible. :bang:

On that note, I'm going to go make sure my bunny and my BCC are playing nice. :sidestep:

There is no evidence that the baby got the bug from the snake - it could have come from anywhere, but she read on the internet after this happened that snakes can carry salmonella. It could well have come from food, or from anywhere else.

Even if it wasn't the snake that gave the baby that bug, hopefully this childminder will have learnt not to allow children in her care to have access to snakes and then to a baby without properly washing their hands! Isn't that covered in childminding 101?

Well that just proves that not enough people do the research before aquiring a pet. All the reptile books I have, mention the fact that reps can carry salmonella. Good hygiene should be part of owning any pet, not just a reptile, cats and dogs also carry some nasties too.

It was the parents responsibility to carry out that research, seeing as the boy is only 9yrs old. Also, if she is a registered Childminder then how on earth did the boy get access to the snake? My daughter-in-law is a registered Childminder and when she had her inspection, they were told that their Royal Pythons cage had to be locked and in another room from where the minded children would be, or else she wouldn't get her registration, and she was told that by a reptile friendly inspector, who said if it had been another inspector then she may not have got her certificate, without getting rid of their Python :shrugs:

A friend of ours young Son, was in hospital with a salmonella infection a couple of years ago and they never, ever had any contact with reptiles. So can the doctors prove where the infection really came from, as I know the doctors couldn't tell our friends where he got it from. I'd love to know the answer to that one!

This sort of story just puts a bad picture out there, to people who don't know much about reptiles and it makes me mad and sad! :(

Believe it or not Iguanas are very commonly found to carry salmonilla especially those wild caught and imported! And they are very capable of passing it on to humans. I was under the impression it was widely known that reptiles carried it, but apparently not.

I was under the impression it was widely known that reptiles carried it, but apparently not.

It is, well, among reptile owners who have done one iota (v.tiny amount) of research at some point during their pet reptile ownership. Those parents are just irresponsible pet/child owners.

British Newspapers are a farse anyways, they'll print any story and make it about ten times more sensational with nothing but pure exaggeration. I read an article in the same newspaper regarding a Ball/Royal Python coming up through some womans toilet whilst she was bathing her baby, the woman then claiming her baby was in mortal danger (yeah if you left it alone in the bath!!!)

This type of thing gets me very mad too!!

Inserting Off Topic Anecdote:
When I was a youngster, I was at a friends house helpig them move a pile of shingles. Just outside of the pinelands in South Jersey. aside from the ringnecks and racers we found in the pile we got a startle. his grandmother was in the restroom and went to open the toilet only to find a 7" black racer had come up through the pipe and was coiled in the toilet. she slammed the lid and ran out shrieking. We cam in put a pillow case over the toilet and tapped on the bowl. soon enough the snake was in the case and out of the house!

Now back on topic. The media twists things so out of focus on far too many occasions and a majority of the people who watch it believe it whole heartedly and turn even a baby getting ill from a reptile into an epidemic in the public's eyes.

So frustrating!

In the UK, salmonella is now widely carried by mass-produced eggs or chicken (i.e. the cheap stuff carried by most big name supermakrets). The strain of salmonella carried by reptiles is distinct from that type - I bet they didn't test for it. Sadly it's more likely that the baby caught it as a result of poor food hygiene, than by transmission from the snake.

Just for once, the animal welfare people don't seem to have used it as anti propaganda. In the quote in the report that I read on the BBC news web site, they restricted themselves to advising washing your hands properly after handling reptiles.

Isn’t it interesting how choosy we can be about what is expectable and what is not? Chicken and eggs cause thousands of cases of salmonella yet none of them even get to the news let alone talk about banning chickens. But people seem to be will to except that risk. Don’t cut salad on the same area as you cut the chicken. We can learn how to work with it. But get rid of the snakes and turtles.

I've had that article pushed under my nose at work today, because I've been rather ill for some time now with gastro/digestive type symptoms, and everybody at work knows I own snakes. While reptiles are a potential source of bacteria I can't think of much that isn't, and I wish people weren't so fast to blame reptiles for these things.

I am so glad the little nipper is okay though. :)

I didn't even think about it, but will expect some flack from the anti-snake brigade at work tomorrow if they've read the article.

Who lets a 5mth old baby near a BOA???? WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO?? I'm angry at the MOTHER!! WTH?? Most 5mth old babies aren't yet crawling let alone barely sitting up! What is wrong w/ people? And she's mad at the petstore for not doing HER research, I'm sure she wants them to flip the hospital bill!!
When an 9yr old is handling a Boa around your infant my advice is to 'Watch YOUR KIDS!!' ARRRGH :angry01:

The sad thing is they haven't even done a fecal on the rainbow boa to find out if it came from "Reg" or not; the strain of salmonella they found is common in turtles/terrapins but I couldn't for the life of me find a record of Pomona-strain salmonella in snakes.

Was that in the article? All it said as far as I could make out was that the nine year old didn't wash his hands after handling the snake and then sometime later touched the baby.

Cats and Dogs carry more things than reptiles....Cats especially....They carry Toxoplasmosis.......Very dodgy for the young, old, weak or pregnant. Yet everyone loves that heartless murdering flea bitten insular ball of fluf

There are many comments in this thread already with which I agree & it would be pointless to repeat them once again.

Yet another typical example of 'let's find someone to blame' for poor mentality & stupidity.

It's just plain common sense to wash your hands after handling/ stroking any animal & that should have been translated to the youngster.

Pleased that the babe is o.k.

I'm all for 'taking down the parents' not the toddler though!
