Ball Python vent problem

The store where I work has a ball python with some sort of an injury to its vent. We've been treating it for about a month with ZooMed's Repti-wound healing aid and it seemed to be getting better until he finally started eating and pooped and then it got worse again.

Since then it's been steadily getting worse and now seems to be spreading away from the vent.

We can't get him in to see the vet for a week or more, anyone know of anything else we can try to make it better while we wait for the specialist?

I'm no expert (although I do have 9 Ball Pythons at home), but it looks a bit like scale rot to me. What kind of substrate do you have him on, and what are the temperatures & humidity?

P.S. I'd suggest posting these over on bp.net (I'll give you the direct link if you need it), as there are TONS of experts on there... I'm sure somebody could give you better advice than myself.

seems like a bit of scale rot, probably incurred due to remaining bits of shed that stuck there.
Increase the temps to the higher end of the recommended scale for a day or two, remove the water dish in order to decrease humidity and use a dry substrate... by the next shed it'll probably be gone. Keep an eye out on the Cloaca- if it begins to swell/change color/anything, he may be suffering from an infection and a vet interference will be needed.

Good luck.

He was originally on aspen, but since we noticed the problem, he's been on paper towel. He's shed once without improvement.

He's currently in a 20L with a heat mat on one end running about 85-90, two wooden half-logs, humidity 15% or less, ambient temperature 72-76 depending on the time of day.

I have not read the whole thread, but it appears to be scale rot from living in nasty conditions or too much moisture.

Put the ball on newspaper or paper towels. You can use antibiotic cream, no pain reliever in it. Keep the ball python, dry and clean and see how it goes.

Do a search for scale rot and check out the ball python forums for more detailed directions.

Good luck!
