It is 3am, I have insomia, but exhausted all the same.

I plan on heavy research when I am more coherent. However, it would be great if I could be led to good links!

I've been reading some posts that are by breeders. What is your sanitary ritual? Does each snake have two bins that get switched for cleaning?

I have been using empty small cardboard boxes as hides, like from potarps, instant oatmeal, etc. I throw them away when I clean and replace them with others. Is this okay? Is it sanitary?

Does it sanitize the bowl enough to wash with dawn dish soap? Or should I use the bleach / vet disinfectant and rinse well after?

When you leave on a trip for a few days, do you leave the heat lamps on? I have two weekend trips coming up for holidays with family and I want to make sure they will be okay.

I am 'rescuing' my old cat from my parents. They were caring for her until I could have her where I live. Is there anything, besides making sure the cat doesn't harm / scare them, that I need to worry about? Sicknesses? Sanitary stuff?

That is all I can think of for now on this topic.

Some have a more rigid ritual than others. Mine just have the one tub and I either have someone hold the snake or I put them in a spare tub until the tub is cleaned. They get spot cleaned weekly and once a month a deep cleaning on the tubs.

As for the cat, just make sure that you keep an eye on him while you're handling the snakes. All it takes is one quick pounce or swat to do some serious damage.

The other thing is that if you are using tanks/vivs, to make sure that the tank lid can support the cat's weight. If not, then I promise that sooner or later he'll jump up onto one and bust through.

We use unprinted newspaper to line our tubs so we check on everyone daily (spot check) and replace newspaper and clean/replace water dishes as necessary. Like mentioned above, the tubs get a thorough cleaning at least if not more than once a month. We use Chlorhexidine solution (generic for Nolvasan) to clean our tubs. Here is an article about disinfectants in regards to reptiles that may be helpful: http://www.anapsid.org/disinfectants.html

Not sure about the heat lamps. Our racks have Flexwatt heat tape and/or UTH regulated by a thermostat so there is no need to leave any other source of lighting on for them when we are away.

Thank you guys.

@ Soul - This cat is older. I've had her since she was a baby kitten. She is now 8, or 9... I forget. She is lazy and refuses to even jump over baby gates. Haha..

We have UTH for our snakes, but at night it gets a little cold so we turn the lamps on for a bit in the morning to warm it up.

I have 2 cats and 3 dogs and my cats don't pay any attention to the snakes when they're outside their vivs. Floyd likes to watch "kitty tv" on occasion (I also have 2 bearded dragons) and he can WATCH but not touch...I have a squirt bottle handy and he knows it well.

I use Aspen bedding for my two and when it's cleaning time (unless I'm just spot cleaning) I take them out and they each have their own seperate bins (I use for feeding them in also). When I had my first cornsnake I used paper towels, which does make it much easier to spot poo, but my two I have now love to burrow in the aspen. If you look under their vivs you can see their little tunnels they have lol.
