I am new to cornsnakes and this forum as well, so I would like to start off by greeting all the forum users :wavey: . I decided to get a cornsnake after watching in awe, my teacher feed a Everglades Kingsnake: ( I stay in North Carolina so how my teacher got a snake from Florida is beyond me :shrugs: ) seeing the snake violently subdue the mouse totally amazed me (what teenager doesn't like violence :punch: ?)! So I bought a cornsnake the day before yesterday (9/7/05) from my local petstore. I ended up with a 10 gallon tank, a tank top, a heat light (50 watt bulb), a thermometer, aspen crumble, and either an Anerythristic, Ghost, or Bloodred Anerythristic cornsnake (can eat fuzzies or large pinkies). Now this is where I get to the point: I got everything up and running to the best of my ability, created my own hide from everyday large rocks (bleached and cleaned them), put the snake in and I have not touched him since.

So now I'm soaking information like a sponge and I want to be sure I know what I need to. So any information at all is welcome, any information you think is important or relevant would help greatly. I'm also hoping this will be the thread to help other newcomers also. Thanks. :wavey:

Welcome to the forum. You will find that there is an immense amount of information in existing threads in each of the sub-forums here. Each one has a 'search' function at the top. If you type in 'heating' in the husbandry forum, you wouldn't believe how many threads you'll find pertaining to the subject. Same goes for keyword 'feeding' in the husbandry and health issues forums. You can also just browse around these forums and look at the thread titles. It's almost guaranteed that most basic questions will be covered in page 1 of the various sub-forums. Have fun, and good luck!

I also wanted to add that most keepers do not recommend that you feed live adult prey to snakes due to the risk of injury from the prey item. It's cool to watch (until the novelty wears off), but frozen prey is usually a lot cheaper too.
 
To go along with the great info u get on this forum i picked up the book "Corn Snakes, The Comprehensive Owner's Guide" by Kathy Love and Bill Love. It's a great source to have around when u need something answered quickly. I ordered mine from Amazon.com i think but any online store like Barnes and Noble would have it to order as well. The only thing i am worried about is the rock hides that you made. Snakes like to be really closed in and if you "built" the hides out of rock id be worried about a rock falling on them. Id also worry that it wouldn't be closed in enough for him to be secure. I got some wooden curved hides and they were a bit upen so i glued cardboard to the front and back with hot glue and he loves em. You can also use a small cardboard box like a half of a poptart box or something as well. Easy because once they get soiled just throw em away! Here is a pic of my viv at this URL... also i use an UTH. Oh and also make sure the lid is really tight fitting, they are excape artists!

I use rocks and the cylinders from emptied paper toilet rolls. My snake's favorite hiding spot is next to the rocks (but she does use the cylinders too). Although, there is a large palm tree bark over it.

I don't pile the rocks in case they fall over. Just one next to the other and she kinda burrows next to one or the other.

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate that. Sorry if it took so long for me to reply, I don't bother with the internet at home (dial-up is way to slow). About my snake, it shed-ed last week surprisingly (it didn't look is was going to shed or at least as far as i could tell :shrugs: ) and it seemed to do fine. However, there is a little piece of it still attached to him and I wondered if I should pull it off or will it harm the snake?

Also, I fed my snake Saturday night: I took him out his tank, held him awhile, (they just won't stay still will they) put him in a separate container, put the pinky (frozen and thawed) in and wait. After several futile attempts at escape it finally notices the pinky and Gulp! :eatsmiley down goes the pinky. I find this terribly amusing :roflmao: and quickly serve another pinky. Once again, he looks for an exit until he aimlessly stumbles upon another pinky, Gulp! :eatsmiley another one bites the dust. Once again I'm astonished and laugh, like a kindergartner watching spongebob :rofl: . I repeat the process, feed :eatsmiley and laugh :laugh:.

Now, your probably saying "Why you feed him a third?" Well, before I bought the snake I saw the store owner feed her batch. She took them out of the tank but put them into the same tank, drops four pinkies in the tank and waits. Both snakes immediately find a pinky and swallows it, afterwards one of the two snakes finds his way under the newspaper and finds rest there, the other however, does not. He finds the second pinky and swallows it no problem, so, if I know my math (2+2=1 :dunce: ) 4 divided by 2 equals 2 so that means 2 pinkies for each snake. Obviously, the snake didn't take math class to seriously or he would have known that wasn't his, so finding the third pinky, he immediately begins to swallow it . Obviously I bought that snake, he didn't regurgitate either.

So this is what I'm getting at: I have read that a snake eats about every week. A snake is fed about once or twice a week, being fed twice a week is called power feeding (three must be super feeding). I'm worried will feeding him three cause him to have any health problems, will he eventually regurgitate (he hasn't yet), :puke01: or will he become obese even before he matures. Oh! I also plan on getting another tank and using a better hide soon and sorry I don't have any picture I will try to get some....maybe...I think....I hope so. Thanks :wavey:
 
If your little guy is taking 2-3 pinks at a time, more then likely he can accept a single fuzzy per feeding. It's always better to feed one larger prey item rather then multiple small prey items.
