BIG New Arrival

This is my newest arrival. Still unsexed, but that will change soon (I'm begging a local herper for a probing lesson this weekend). I *hope* it's a female. This is a big and beautiful snake, weighing in at just over 650g.

Sorry about the awful photography. I'll take more when it's settled in. New additions are always stiff and jumpy and they make terrible photo subjects.

Wow! How gorgeous! Congrats! I hope its the female you wanted! Planning to breed I assume? Have a male picked out?

Root beer, huh? I was thinking normal. Jeez, gotta start comparing photos again.

I am hoping to breed. If this is a normal female, I'll pair her to my '04 normal triple het male (amel/lavender/motley) and hope she's het for something. If not, then at least I will have raised one clutch and hopefully can decide whether I want to continue with snakes.

If it's a male, then I'll STILL be in the market for a big female. If it turns out to be a rootbeer (male or female), then I'll have to get creative. :shrugs:

Nanci, no story really. My husband and I have lots of contacts because of our bird business, and they all know that we keep snakes as well as birds. David (hubby) got a call from a Petco manager saying that a customer was trying to sell a "big cornsnake" for $40. David bought it sight unseen. Looks like we got a pretty good deal...even better if it's female. :) It does have a bit of leftover shed, but that's easy to fix. I just can't get over the size!!! :eek1:

Well, I did say "looks like" :grin01:
Something about the saddle shape and the large saddle count, not to mention the side pattern, screams Emoryi to me. Nice serpent!

Argh...I need to see more rootbeers...I thought they were more brownish all over. This is bright red and dark bluish gray. :shrugs:

You're a mean bubble burster. :twoguns:

Exactly what I was thinking even before I saw your replies. If that snake ain't at least 25% emoryi, I'll chew up a fuzzy and swallow it. :grin01:

I love rootbeers, and I consider that a very nice example.

If I bred that snake, I would definitely alert buyers of the offspring to their possible hybrid (or intergrade, if you prefer) heritage.

Sooo...is it a rootbeer???

Does anyone else think my new snake is a rootbeer? :shrugs:

He's a great feeder. Fed him three adult mice for dinner. Another effortless F/T conversion. What are the odds?? :grin01:

(See my shiny new medallion? )

I agree, looks like a rootbeer to me based on the saddle count/pattern. Remember that rootbeers are just normals with emoryi blood, their color varies greatly.

Breed him/her with who ever you want, just mark the babies properly when you sell them.

I have a creamsicle, he is best eater, faster grower I have. I don't know if its from the emoryi influence but I'm guessing he will be a beast when grown. I'm hoping he is het anery so I get get snow babies from him, I would love to start a line of snowsicle's with the robust size the emoryi affords.

I heard females have long thin pointy tails and males have shorter less pointed tails..to me it looks like it might turn out to be a male

Both sexes' tails are equally pointy. :grin01: Males have longer tails that stay fairly uniform in width far past the vent. Females have shorter tails that taper sharply after the vent.

Carefull Dean, I worked with a guy in Petland who did just that. However it was a pinky. :grin01: Gross eh?

I really love the silver and red on this beauty. Hope it turns out to be the female you wanted!

I say DEFINITE Root beer. Not NEARLY enough red to be considered a Miami (IMHO)

As for eating a pinkie, that's just NASTY! I hope the poor thing was prekilled! :puke01:
