Big Red

Soooo...what actually CAUSES it? I know some have mentioned that it comes from gaining weight, but I've seen plenty of overweight snakes that didn't have "hips", and now I'm seeing Big Red who has "hips" but doesn't look overweight at all.

I suppose egg laying isn't a cause (at least not the primary cause), since someone mentioned a male having "hips" too.

Is it possible that it is caused by uneven RAPID weight gain rather than just weight gain in general? :shrugs: That sounds like a more reasonable explanation to me.

The exact cause is apparently not known. Kathy Love suggests it may be due to captivity, that is, not getting enough exercise I assume. It seems to be in older females. I think David was mistaken saying he had a male with hips.

Interesting. Sounds like it might be caused by rapid, disproportionate weight gain...kinda like stretch marks in humans. I am a nerd, so naturally I must research this.

Sorry I couldn't weigh her, my scale only goes to 500 grams.
Okay, I'm flipping out now. I just checked my scale and it's capacity is 2.2kg.
Anyone else have a corn over 2000g? :shrugs:

If that snake's over 2200g, I'll eat a fat fuzzy (I'll even chew)! If you're 4' estimate is anywhere near correct, it just can't be.

Yeah, I'll eat one too! I don't get it. Fresh batteries and all I kept getting was the error readout! After she sheds, I'll see if any of my local herp shops have a better scale. I'm guessing 800g+ :shrugs:

I had a probed male that had 'hips', though they may have been caused by something different than the females 'hips'.

Maybe he was using extenze :sidestep:
Seriously, this adds more need to research this condition.
Anyone else have any experience with "hips"? Bring it on!

I had something I wanted to add to this discussion, but the thought of Dean and Mike munching Fat Fuzzies totally drove it out of my mind.

Nanci

I hope I don't have nightmares...

In january I had a corn to take care for (owner on vacation) who was really big. Not really tall, a little over 140 cm, and the weight was not as much as I espected (768 grams), but it had hips, even a little bigger than that.
So I talked to the owner about an diet.

I had a big male (another owner on vacation :p ) a couple of weeks ago, and it was really big and massive, and quite some weight, but it weight also in the 750 range.

A corn can get 1000 grams, but 2000 grams is a little bit too much.

Maybe something is wrong with the scale, I have a scale till 2000 grams, but if I weigh something more than 850 gram it does not work right anymore.
