Big Sunday - New snakes and new eggs

TrpnBils

22 is not enough snakes
Tell me this isn't the coolest day....

I went to a reptile show near Pittsburgh on Sunday and picked up a pair of Macklot's (Freckled) Pythons from a guy. They're neat little snakes (just '08s, so they've got some growing to do), and they're a little crazy now, but they should calm down in a few months. At this point I have to use a modified coat hanger as a hook to handle them. Once they're out though, they're fine. I'm trying out bioactive substrate setups with them and the setups look cool...I'm just being really careful about bacteria, etc, and I'm going to get fecals done on a regular basis just to make sure it's all working as it should.

So about 5 minutes after I got these snakes, my phone rang. My fiancee wanted to know if I'd be interested in fostering some GTP eggs for a friend. He had two together and wasn't planning on breeding (oops), and the female dropped 20 eggs that morning. Last year I hatched out 38 at the zoo, and I had all the supplies to build a new incubator at home, so I set that all up, and Steph picked the eggs up on her way home from work.

I was a little nervous about the car ride and how it would affect the eggs, but it seems to have gone OK. We started out with 20 and three looked bad so I pitched them right off the bat. Another seven went on Sunday night, but for first time parents I'm not surprised. The remaining 10 look great though! I'm not holding any expectations here because I don't think eggs were meant to be moved like that...but it'd be great if we got even one hatchling out of this.

Anyway, here are some pictures of the Macklots (the lighter brownish one is the male):

One more night down, and the remaining 10 look good still!

I tried something with the one that I'm hoping will work... GTP eggs are really sensitive to water. It's kind of tricky to have 100% humidity and not have a single drop of water touch them, but I'm using the same system I used last year and it seems to be OK. I had one egg yesterday morning that I almost discarded because it had large clear spots on it... every other GTP egg I've ever seen look like that was rotting within 24 hours, and I think it's because the egg is too wet. So with this egg, I took some bone dry perlite (I'm incubating on damp perlite) and set the egg right up on top of it in the container so that it wasn't buried at all. Last night when I checked it, the egg had whitened up again and looked great (so actually we have 11 eggs I guess...I kept lumping that one with the "discarded" group). It didn't dry it out to the point where it was dimpling (actually it looks pretty full) and it still looked good this morning, which was the 24 hour mark. I'm interested to see if it makes it, and if it does I'm going to be kicking myself for not figuring it out sooner...I could've probably saved other ones the same way!

Nice,
I really like the variation you have here in colors. I really like Macklotts and I can honestly say there is an interesting difference in colors. I really like the light brown one.

Here is my wee guy.

Nice snake... it's neat how they only seem to have that shimmer on their head. How old is that one? Mine are around 24" right now (32 and 54 grams) so I think they're only 2 or 3 months old maybe???

oh... I guess I thought it looked bigger than that. When I first looked at the picture I thought it was a few years old :)
