this is sort of in continuation of this thread http://cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=70810

anyhow this is from the clutch of 16 with 3 remaining good eggs left. They first started pipping on this past Wed, the 2nd egg to have any "action" was the first hatchling out and is what i'm pretty certain is a normal with partial zig-zag (featured in the above thread). so I was talking to stephen tonight and he said that it takes 24 hrs from when they slit to sticking a nose out (or are completely out) if its more than that it is probably dead or something is wrong. So on his advice and with directions i cut open egg #1 (the one that slit itselef on Wed) ... it indeed was dead, lots of yoke left, some skin attached to the egg. Probably had died soon after making some slits.

I decided after consultation to also cut into the 3rd and last egg. I had first noted slitting in it last night, and following the 24 hr rule decided to check on it. Unfortunately this one was also dead, and had quite a bit of yoke still.

The good and the bad is that these 2 hatchlings have i believe proven out probably the more coveted of the 2 ph, sunkissed. And one is a motley ..... anyhow here's some pics. Once the living hatchling has shed I'll know for sure if its normal, and if it is i will sit with my belief that these DIE are sunkissed and sunkissed mot. Anyhow here's some pics of the DIE.

I cut one open this year.. After doing that very thing, I slapped my forehead.. D'oh, a nice bright, single bulb LED flash light works pretty darn good too.. Why didn't I think of that at the time I slit the egg.. The little ones inside often react to the bright light being shown down on them, usually by twitching the head or even moving the body.. Never again will I feel the need to must slice an egg open..

Regards.. Tim of T and J

Hey, have my sympathy :-/
At least you know the hets and have one little guy left, I cross my fingers he/she is well, strong and het. sunkissed & motley ;)

Oo, the LED flashlight is a good idea, I'll remember that for the next clutch. Steve was pretty certain at least the first egg was dead since it had first slit Wed.

I'm hoping that i have better luck in my next clutch they're due about Aug 15th or so.

So sorry for your loss, rosecat. More "health vibes" coming your way from this corner of the planet for the survivor. Keep us posted!

p.s. Thanks again for the tutorial last night. I'm kind of getting the hang of the morph thing now. *hugs*

Sorry about the deceased little guys. I candled then slit almost every egg when my incubator thermostat failed. I was checking for viable babies. Of course, as you probably already know, noboby survived but this "seeing" the morphs I had lost was harder than just losing them and not knowing. I'm glad you possibly proved out you animal's het, but man, that's a tough way of finding out. Thanks for sharing the pics.

I cut open an egg tonight also, i could see the slash marks on the inside of the egg where it tried to slit open. I slit it open where it had been trying and the hatchling doesnt seem viable, but I'm waiting till morning. It doesnt move at all though. I almost wish I wouldve done it sooner... Sorry about your babies :(

I'm sorry to hear that you lost those 2 hatchlings.

Looking at the size of the slits in the photos you posted in the other thread, even the one with the head poking out, and your resulting DIE hatchlings, I'm going to continue to use my 2 pairs of tweezers to gently tear a larger slit in the eggs as soon as I notice one. I've lost hatchlings in the past due to them getting their heads stuck in a tiny slit and basically strangle or being unable to find (or go through) the tiny slits they already made and drown. Since I started doing that, I've not had any repeat deaths due to those problems. I get hatchlings that still have alot of yolk to absorb but, they've all stayed in their eggs, fully absorbed the yolk and come out when they're ready.

o that sounds like a good idea too ... i think i'm going to have to buy tweezers ... our new place is still in a big jumble, I'm pretty sure we had tweezers, but I have no idea where they went when we started the move.

Sorry to hear you lost two of the hatchlings, really sucks that they appear to have been homo for the traits you were hoping to prove out. Hope the rest of your clutches do better for you!
