Hey guys!

My name is Charles and I have loved snakes all my life but was never able to own one. But I have finally joined the ranks of the finest pet owners in the world! It took my wife a while to come around but she and my kids are all enthralled by our newest addition to our family. Her name is Rowan (means "little red snake") and she looks to be an albino snow corn. I haven't got a good picture of her yet, but this picture I found looks EXACTLY like her!

She's still pretty shy and I'm having to work with her since she regurged the first two feedings of pinkies. I'm scheduled to feed her again tomorrow night and I plan to cover the enclosure (except for the top) so that she will have as little stress as possible.

If any of you have any hints on how to get her acclimated to us faster, please feel free to let me know. Thanks!

If you do a search on regurge here you will see after a regurge the snake should not be fed for 8 days. I know regurge can be from stress like handling or a meal that is too big. I would first do a search, but then feed in eight days and only 1/2 a pinkie. A smaller meal is easier to digest when they have regurged a lot of their digestive enzymes and healthy bacterias are lost. Also the eight day wait sounds long, but it will give your snake time to rebuild its digestive track and have a better chance of keeping a meal down.

Welcome! It's always great to meet new snakekeepers. I hate to be the one to bear the bad news, but two regurges is pretty serious. There are numerous tremendously experienced keepers here who can adivise you on your next steps. I'd very much hate to see you lose your new baby, but sadly, that can happen quickly.

So cs.com gang, I have to run, but can someone please post Kathy's regurg protocol for him?

And by the way, please do not attempt to feed your new snake until you read the protocol and understand the dangers of regurging. Best of luck to you!

Welcome.

You've gotten some good advice already. Just so a search on regurge or read the stickies at the top of the forums. Good luck.

Also, as a linguistic anthro major, I must ask, what language is rowan??

Thanks for the advice! I looked but couldn't find the protocols you mentioned. Could you post them for me?

The first regurge happened, I believe, based purely on stress because it was the first day in her new home. I think the second was simply because it was done to soon based on what I've read here. I've decided to wait until Saturday to try again since that will be eight days. Also, I'm creating a cover for the sides of my terarium so that when I do feed her I can give her complete privacy to digest. Does this sound like a good idea?

I don't know if it's correct or not, but we found this on a site and my family decided they like it. Here's the quote from the site:

[Irish surname transferred to forename use, derived from an Anglicized form of Gaelic "Ruadhán," meaning "little red one."]

Have a look at Kathy's protocol and then feel free to ask more questions as needed. Personally, I would wait ten full days before trying again since he's had two regurges already. Also make sure you're feeding him the correct sized prey item. I'd go for an even smaller meal the next time.

Here's the link, scroll about half way down the page and you'll find it.

Thank you so much for your advice! After reading the protocols and following them (I also added the side covers which not only gave Rowan more privacy but also helped to regulate the temperature), I have had two sucessful feedings. Not only that, but Rowan is acting less shy and is out exploring, sunning, and being generally much more active. Here is a picture of Rowan. Sorry it's not better quality but I took the picture from my iPhone.

Congrats on your new little one ^.^. Just a question, do you feed her in her viv or in a separate container?
