Now I need help because I made myself a new rule. No new snakes except to complete the pairs and trios I already have. :sobstory: My problem is that I can't decide what would be the best. Perhaps some of you genetics gurus will have some good ideas. So far the following need mates.

Chitto- 0.1 miami. Het amel and anery A. She's huge and hearty with the cleanest silver background ever, and nice deep reds.

Rosella- 0.1 snow het lav. Suspected hypo.

Sanguineus and Arteria- 1.1 hypo bloodreds. I am tempted to sell Sanguineus because he is a 2004 and is not diffusing as much as I hoped he would. How long does it take for a bloodred to really color up? Arteria is also a 2004 and she is extremely diffused and deep red already. Sanguineus' head is still grey! Is this a normal stage for bloodreds to be at colorwise at 2 years old?

Iolanthe- 0.1 Phantom, poss het. anery A. She has a cute snub nose and blue eyes.

Trogdor, Rita, and Katrina- 1.2 hurricane motley anery A's, poss hets hypo, amel and lav. I am probably going to sell the male at some point since he is their brother. Or get him some new females... :rolleyes:

Circe- 0.1 Amel Motley, unknown hets. Nice contrasty orange and red with complete motley pattern.

Anyway, I was trying to come up with gene combos for a mate that would possibly meet the needs of more than one group. Here's my ideas:

1.0 Lavender motley, homo or het hypo with poss hets or homo of anery and amel. to be paired with Rita, Katrina, Rosella, possibly Circe.

I really wanted to get a miami mot or stripe male from Carol this year for Chitto, but alas the waiting list is full...She is a huge 2004 and will definitely be ready to go next year. The other possibility I thought of was a candycane male since she is het amel and has such a clean background. Any ideas?

If I do decide to not keep Sanguineus, I really don't know what to get. Hypo bloodred? Diffused charcoal het hypo for Iolanthe and Arteria? If anybody has any ideas on this one, or knows whether my male is diffusion impaired or not let me know! Next year I think I may breed him with the snow het lav anyway, just to make a ton-o-hets to play with in a few years...
 
Those breeding plans sound pretty fun. Go for it.

As for bloodreds, they can take up to 5 years to reach their full potential, so your call on whether you want to wait that long to decide whether to keep your male hypo bloodred.

You might try mating Trogdor x Rosella. This would be a test to see if he is heterozygous amelanistic. And you might get lucky and get an anerythristic lavender baby or three.

Trogdor x Circe would test him for heterozygous amelanistic and test her for heterozygous anerythristic. All the babies would be motleys, but your guess is as good as mine whether any might be hurricane motleys.
 
You could go with a male Lavender bloodred, possibly one that's also het hypo. that depends on how much you're willing to invest. Good luck! :cheers:
 
Thanks everyone! I hadn't thought of putting Trogdor with anyone since he's an '05, it just hadn't crossed my mind. Good idea!

I am relieved to hear that it takes up to five years for them to color in. Both of my hypo bloodreds are from Serpenco, so I do not doubt the qualitiy of the stock, just wasn't sure if he was some kind of developmental fluke or if it's normal for some bloodreds to be late bloomers. Arteria was almost solid red by the time she was 1 year old. I will probably give him time then. His saddles are a very attractive deep red, so if his ground color matches them some day he will be a very pretty bloodred.
 
Don't get rid of your hypo blood!

Even if he doesn't turn out quite as well as you hoped, since he is from good stock, he may produce some super babies anyway! Now that they are almost breeding age, it would be a shame to start all over again. Just keep back the very best babies for the next generation, and chances are that at least some of them will be better than the parents. You can always either keep back or buy another male to raise for the future. Not every baby from gorgeous parents will turn out as well, and not every baby from a so-so parent will turn out mediocre, either. So stick with him at least through his first progeny to see how you like them. I guess I am prejudiced though - hypo bloods are some of my favorites of all!

I really like Miami mots and stripes. While you wait in line for a baby, why not breed the Miami to your anery mot and keep back a few female babies that show the Miami colors best to mate to the eventual Miami mot or stripe that you will buy?

A lav mot would be great and very useful - go for it!
