Brumation question

How do you guys do it?
I want to get a pair of hognose's and breed them eventually but I was just thinking to myself about the whole brumation issue... My house is around 70 degrees throughout the year. I'm assuming I can't put the snakes in the fridge LOL and I can't keep one whole room colder because the heating is linked to the whole house... Any ideas on how to keep a pair of hoggies around 55 degrees for a couple months? I'm at a loss.

I brumate in my mudroom. There's no heat in there, and I use a draft dodger to help prevent heat from getting in (and to help keep the cold air out of the rest of the house). Do you have a basement? Garage that doesn't get extremely cold? A friend's house nearby that could meet the requirements? I don't know anything about hoggie breeding, but I know that with corns, many people don't bother to brumate. Fertility seems to be about the same either way. I brumate mostly for the break it gives me from feeding the adults for 3 months (and because it helps get the males and females on similar schedules when it comes to breeding).

Ah, you're lucky to have a nice cold room like that! Here in the SF bay area though, it's generally 70 degrees year round!

My only idea is to get one of those mini fridges, set it to 55 degrees, and somehow drill a hole or something in it for air flow... Would that work ok? Can you see any problems with doing this?

Hmm, I guess I did glance at your location, it just didn't register that it wouldn't really get cold enough ....

I wouldn't do it that way, personally, as I'm just way too paranoid about things happening to my 'kids'. I think I've heard of people doing it, but more for incubation though, I believe. I suppose it would be possible to make it work the other way around. :shrugs:

Hopefully somebody out in your area will be able to give you more ideas. Carol maybe? I know she's out your way.
