Bug Question

Sapper

New member
I went to our cornsnake's cage in my daughter's room and it was covered with these little white clear looking bugs jumping around. Some were in the water dish BUT the snake had nothing on it. There were two large piles of poop . We put the Black Fir Forest substrate recommend by the local pet store. Are these the type of bugs that will get on the substrate only and not the snake?? Our other cornsnakes cage is covered also with these white jumping bugs? Both aquariums are in separate rooms and have little or no contact with each other. Our other snake had nothing on it either.
We did however had the windows open during the warm spell here. The bleach and water seem to not have any effect on them. The substrate is washable. These bugs appeared within the last day or so.

My daughter's cage seemed to have a fowl order to the substrate. Where as my son's cage did not.

Please advise what these are? mites? of come sort?

I think the clear mites are wood mites (I'm not positive). If they are wood mites they are harmless to the snake. I have read a lot of threads that mention them when using that kind of substrate, I would dump it and use paper towel for a while and then switch to aspen <---no mites. Again I am not positive, it is possible that snake mites can be clear as well as black, I haven't researched it much. Good luck ;)

Jumping suggests springtails maybe? I would clean both cages out with mild bleach solution, unfortunately it has been so long since I have used it on my bearded dragons caging, that I fotgot the ratio. Plus cornsnakes may be different ayway. Then would use white paper towels for a substrate for awhile. A couple of weeks, then clean the cage again, use paper towels at least a little longer, then try another bedding type like aspen or sani chips. This is what I would do. Als see what others here say that are more experienced with what to use as a cleaning solution for snakes. Goodluck. Lindsay

Question again?

So I should start fresh...okay.

The substrate I have is washable and can be reused. Would you all recommend washing it out and letting it dry and reusing it?

:rolleyes: confused??

Douglas Fir bark/shavings are apparently toxic to your snake, no different then using pine shavings, I started out using douglas fir bark and after a day of reading information I went out and bought Aspen shavings, like others have said its safe for your snake, easy to spot clean your snakes feces, also its very cheap, looks great and easy to get. I think we all recommend you getting this for your snakes!

Aspen=boring,unnatural look,,,sorry guys,but its the truth :shrugs:
I would go with jungle floor,or cypress mulch,,even coco nut bark.Dark substrates just look better,,unless you want a desert look.
