Bugs

I found a number of bugs (5-10), all look like this is my quarantined snake's viv. I pulled all substrate, replaced with newspaper, baked all the wood, and washed out the hides with bleach/water. I can't see anything on the snake, but could this be related to the scale problem? Or is these some harmless bugs that like the warmth and decided to set up shop and breed inside tank?Thanks............

They don't look like mites, and I don't think they are the cause of the bent scales. It looks more like your corn got stuck in something and pulled back, pulling the scales up.
My bet is that these bugs are harmless, but I wouldn't want any bugs living in my cages. I would just buy the Provent a mite and use it, it will kill all bugs.

I don't think I'd treat beyond baking the wood/freezing the substrate. Poison is poison, and I would avoid it if at all possible.

I think i'm going to buy the no name NIX, and dilute it accordingly, because the only place I've been able to find PAM in Canada wants 50 dollars for a can....Rather pricey, plus i have to wait for it to ship across country. I can also isolate snake in a Rubbermaid, and throw a flea collar into the viv, which should have the effect of killing anything left in the viv..thoughts?

No Poison? Ok, no poison. Would freezing the bag of substrate which the snake came with be a good idea? I don't want to throw it out, its a HUGE bag of aspen, just about full too. It will JUST fit into my freezer. What do you think about the flea collar? No no?

I wouldn't risk it. The bugs aren't living on the snake. They aren't hurting the snake. It's not worth the risk. I have heard of deaths both from flea collars and from no pest strips put in with snakes.

You don't have to freeze all the substrate at once, just as much as you're going to use.

I wouldn't take a chance on the flea collar. Small kittens and puppies can't use them because theyre too strong, so I'd imagine it could/would be harmful to a snake as well. And Nanci said above to try freezing the substrate. That should kill any bugs living in it

But freezing it all at once should kill em all at once, if they're in there, right? The bag will fit into my freezer, and i would like to use it for my other snakes, almost out of my zoo med/generic mix anyways....Thanks again everyone!

Honestly, if you're worried about it, I'd say to just keep it in the freezer all the time and just take out what you'll need when replacing the aspen in their tanks. Just make sure you take it out early enough before that it's warmed back up before the snake touches it.
I can't see it being hurt by staying in the freezer
