What's the average diameter of a full size corn when coiled? Would 6x6 or 8x8 be too small for a hide? I know this is the corn snake forum, but I'm building two, one for my corn and one for a ball python so if you own a bp, can you answer for both?

Also, does anyone know what kind of wood craft sticks are made of? Like popsicle sticks, beveled sticks... basically just wooden sticks used in crafts... I've been assured it's not cedar, but I can't find any facts to back it up. Could it be pine? It's DEFINTELY not balsa... lol
 
a 6x6 would work great for a hide. an 8x8 would be good too, but a little big. My male snow is 4 foot long, and he can coil into a small 4 inch coil. it is really cool to watch.

i don't now about the ball python, or what the wood in popsicle sticks are, but I am sure that someone can help you out with them.

And what about moss? I have a package of that fake stuff used in model crafts... it looks very real, but I haven't a clue what it's made of. My dad built a model of a house he built and used it in the landscape (gave me the leftovers). Safe to glue on the hide, do you think?
 
Unless I could be sure what was in it, I wouldn't use it. You never know if it will harm your snake or not...and I am sure that we don't want Max to be put at potential danger
 
I made a woden hide thats 8by 8 and 2 inches high that my adlt fits in nicley with about 4 inches of tail sticking out, but he could fit it in if he wanted.
As to the moss i wouldn't bother, but thats just MHO.
 
Absolutely. It's that stuff that's specifically designed to use in landscape models. It looks and feels very close to the real thing, but if anything it's got a more rubbery texture to it... I guess... I can't possibly see what danger it could cause, but like you said I haven't a clue what it's made of.

CM: It's a little cabin hide and I want to glue moss to the roof.
 
Popsicle sticks were orrigionally made of Birch wood. I'm not sure if this still holds true. If you got a package of popsicle sticks though, shouldn't it's componates be listed in the same mannar ingrediants are with food? :shrugs:

If your glueing i would use the water based model glue, and leave for 72 hours after compeation to ventalate and try out compleatly.

As to what the popsicle stick (whatever one is) is made out of, pass i have no idea.
 
Birch! Well assuming all "craft sticks" (as they're called in the stores) are made of birch also (or just NOT cedar) then I'm good!

BTW cornman, most model glues are toxic (I'm unaware of any that are not)... I'm going to use aquarium sealant if it will work (and doesn't cost much), otherwise just regular elmer's white school glue.

I know most are toxic but i thought maybe 1 or 2 might be water based and non toxic, but i haven't used any glue for a while so it was only a sugestion.
I never thought of aquarium sealant as that should work as well if not better.
 
I don't know how well it would work to glue wood together though, but I'll likely use it to seal off any cracks.

My friend told me last that that he has some paper mache hides for his snakes, one being a giant mouse (or was it a rat) where the mouth is open and the tongue is a ramp. LOL! I'm excited enough glueing popsicle sticks together, forget about paper mache. I'd make my OWN furniture if I could... screw the little projects, paper mache is FUN! :laugh:
 
Does anyone know what kind of wood sealant is best to use? Just to seal off the wood so I can wash it when need be.

Varnish? Good or bad. The scrap (practice) one is almost finished but I'm not sure what's best to treat it with.

If anyone wants to see the finished house, I'll post a pic later. :D
 
Spirit, what about poly? That's what I used when I re-finished my teak kitchen table....I'd think it'd be safe if you let it dry and air out for a few days, no?
 
Thanks Joe. No one in the chat room could give me any answers, but Stephen suggested the same thing after I posted. I'll use that.

It's just that there are so many things that's claimed unsafe for my baby... I don't know if I'm being overprotective or not. lol
 
You can never be over protective when it comes to something that you love. I am the same way. I always research everything new I am gonig to use in any of my vivs. An Indoor Latex based Paint will work well for you too. After it dries, it will be washable and non-toxic to the snake. Just make sure to let it dry completely and air it out before putting it in the viv.
