Bulls and Gophers?

I've always been intersted in pits but never have really had the room for these guys and have some what neverous about there reputaion of being...'lively". However my brother has recently cleaned out his fish tank and I have it in my room and also I'm trying to sell some of the leopard geckos I've produced this year. I hope to use the money from them to purchase either a bull or gopher snake or find someone thats willing to make a trade.
Anyways I am curious to see who here owns any of these giant colubrids what you think of them. Post pictures to, I'd love to see your pits..lol!

I have never been around bulls but gophers are common to this area and I raise lots of them as a kid. They aren't any different to be around than a corn snake. They are good snakes to raise.

Well,my 8 year old daughter handled a bull-snake at the Cleveland Show and he was a sweetie! Don't know if that's the norm though or if it's just her. She shows no fear. She even made a vendor speechless when he offered to let her hold a tarantula and she said "sure!". He had just been joking with her(she was in a little dress and looking very girly that day) and said he was speechless. He HAD to let her hold one then!

Thanks for the info guy! Also I forgot to mention I'm also interested in pine snakes also. So if anyone can testify for them and have any pictures that'd be great!

After doing some reasearch and talking to many people I'm definately push more in the direction of a Northern Pine, with a bull being a runner up. Now I just need to sell some of the geckos to get the money and space for one hopefully.

I don't have any yet, but I plan on getting one soon. When I get my Pit, it's very likely going to be one of KJUN's Red Bulls. They're gorgeous animals, and I can't wait until I have one of my own. Good luck finding the right one, and post pictures when you get one! :)

That's my 5 year old playing with a young Great Basin gophersnake that we found in the road moments before. Doesn't he look intimidating?

Gophersnakes are a LOT of bluff and hiss. Don't get me wrong...they can put a good bite on you. But mostly they are very vocal...hissing incredibly loud and flattening out their head to look tough. But they generally tame down quite well, and do very well in captivity. They will absolutely let you know if they aren't in the mood for your shenanigans, and they are one of the colubrids that I actually abide when they act angry. But for the most part...they are fairly large, and hefty snakes, and they usually tolerate handling and do well in captivity. For the most part...

I have two bulls, and like any snake they both have diffrent personalitys.. the femail bonny is so sweet she hisses and rattles her tail a lil but never strikes.. the male clide on th other hand.. omg hes half her size. just an earthwarm and man he must tag me 10 time every time i handle him. but hes getting better. i make sure to handle him everyday and its taken him less and less time to calm down and just chill in my hands. get them when there either older and have been handeled or if u get them young make sure to handle them alot to get them used to it. gophers dont get much bigger then corns but ive herd bulls can get up to 10 ft. a bite from one would not be fun. Pines get even bigger. atleast in this area alot of them get killed because ppl think there diamond backs.

Bulls/Gophers are one of my FAVORITE species. They have a ton of variety in morphs and attitude. My guess (hope) is that they calm with age and handling.

This is my yearling Cosmos. He has major attitude most of the time...(totally worth it)

(Sonoran Gopher X Cape Gopher)

This is a totally tame, pleasure to handle, wild Sonoran Gopher I found in early July.

And another completely mild mannered Albino Sonoran at the Tucson Reptile Show last year.

I HIGHLY recommend getting a pit! Just be sure you know they can have a real attitude at times :D

I had a hypo bull that was a timid sweetie. He was definitely bigger than my corns. I also have a corn/bull hybrid that is also very sweet, and large.

I am interested in these snakes..I'd love to own a pair of each someday..along with a pair of Pine snakes too..
BUT..there are wayyyy to many Rat snakes I have to get first.

actually.......if I cam accross a good deal I'd get one now..lol..
They are just so darn cute!..how can you no?

I love my Bulls and my Gophers, a couple of my Gophers
are kind of flighty but settle down after awhile.
My Bulls are 2 sweethearts..
I've been thinking of trying "Turbo Corns" next year for kicks,
(Gopher/Corn), we'll see how it goes.. LOL

I like my pits so much I sent my Rats elsewhere..

My ex had a black Pine and she was so gorgeous! She tagged me once but in general she was totally docile, a real sweetheart. I miss her.

i got Bulls, gophers and pines at my place..
great snakes but like people they can be moody. You can have nice ones and some really mean ones.

This was my large female sonoran. She was over 6.5 feet. She recently passed away this year.

Here is a pic of my 06 Hypo Bull snake I got from Ben Siegel Reptiles, several years back. They are definetely diffrent than corns , as far as size and personality. My young female bull only hissed a couple of times when I would handle her. But she never did try to bite.

By the way I paid $ 75 for mine which I thought was a pretty good deal, compared to some of the other prices I saw for a similar animal.

Hope you get one in the future, you'll like them.
