Sup guys,

Okay, so I've been reading up on all different kinds of snakes over the past year or so, I find them to be quite interesting but I was never able to get one because my dad is not fond of them :awcrap: But my pops went on a business trip so I figured "hey, I got some extra time and money so I figured I'd pick up a snake and the other necessities" :D He'll probably never see it anyway since it's in my room.

But here's my dilemma, I'm not sure what kind of snake I have... I'm only aware of a few places that carry snakes in my area and Petco happened to be one of them (other ones want an arm and a leg). I went to two different ones to see what they had and I found the snake I have ATM. There were two labels on the tank it was in at the store, King snake and Rat snake.

I can only assume it was a new arrival because he/she was very active "checking" out the area, a lot a tongue flicking (I'm under the impression they do this when in new surroundings to establish what's what, correct me if I'm wrong however). He/she looks beautiful and healthy so I made a purchase.

Perhaps an ID can be made via some pictures I snapped today.
He/she is about 16" long now.

At the moment I have the snake in a standard 10 gallon tank with a UTH on the side of the tank with two plastic hides, a water bowl and paper towels for a substrate. The tank temp near the heater is about 80-85 and on the cooler side it’s about 70ish. The snake has been using both hides and seems content with the current setup.

Thanks for reading,
Brian

its definately a North American Rat Snake, which subspecies I don't know, you'd have to wait until it gets older to be 100% because they all basicly start out the snake. I want to say Grey Rat but its could easily be a black, everglades, texas, or yellow rat snake to.

Awesome, thank you

almost looks like a corn hybrid but im not good at all at guessing someone should be by soon

We're both in the same boat lol

I'm wondering what sized pinky I should feed... It's head is pretty small... I'm assuming maybe a 1/2 day old? F/T of course

Thanks again,
Brian

Awesome... the snake just ate two pinkies like it was no bodys business!

can I continue to get info/make threads about my snake even though it's not a corn?

I guess it could be an anery corn, though the head looks more like an obsoleta. Looks like a juvie black rat or possibly gray from the photos. You'll know in a few months, either way and the care will be identical.

My guess is it's the kind that will get your butt kicked when your pops comes home. ;)

What he says... Hope you have a grand reason if your dad finds out. Would be a shame for you to lose this cute thing since you just got him.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, just as long as I know the general species, the exact kind really doesn't matter, I think his colors are awesome.

I'm going to guess some sort of rat snake... My guess is going to a gulf hammock, or maybe a gray.

I immediately thought, "Black Rat". But those with more experience have spoken! LOL.

Nice on though!!! Congrats!

Thanks guys :D

I hope not lol Say a prayer for me though! lmao

I'll have to tell a little white lie and say he was in a terrible cage at Petco (which is very possible down the road if I hadn't bought him IMO and observations lol) and say that those wonderful morals you taught me while growing up wouldn't allow me to leave such a nice snake in a store like that where his demise would surly be met... Something along those lines which will technically make it his fault for making me such a stand up guy :D

Wish me luck however lol
