Buying a cornsnake

So, I've convinced my mom into letting me get a cornsnake, but she doesn't want dead mice in the freezer, or live mice anywhere near the house.

My dog eats Pedigree wet food, so I was thinking that I might be able to give it chunks of meat. Haha. I can't imagine it being that nutritious, though.
Would steak or chicken work?

Any alternatives at all?

This would be a lifelong thing, not temporary.

I don't know too much about snakes.
Eep! Help? Suggestions?

Thanks. <3

To be honest I can't see another way around it. Frozen pinkies/mice/rats/gerbils are the best way, followed by live foods (only if it legal in you country). I dont think you can use bits of meat like a dog or cat. Snakes need all the nutrition from their food. e.g bones and fur etc. If you gave it a piece of chicken then all it is getting is the meat. My mom didnt want frozen mice in the freezer either but I convinced mine by using a solid colour tub so you couldn't see what was in at anyway. So when you open the freezer you cant see whats in the tub. Hope this helps.

Maybe you can try whole chicks? However i think mice/gerbils are best. Why dont try keeping hamsters or gerbils. Gerbils do not have apronounced odour.

Have you looked into buying a miniature fridge with freezer for your bedroom? They make them for dorm rooms, and they don't take up much space. Plus, you'll be able to keep your RedBull cold. You can buy them on sale for less than $100.

In my opinion corns should not be fed anything other than mice or rats of the appropriate size. Unless you buy anoles...

Unfortunately if you mom is okay with you having a snake, she'll have to be okay with you feeding it correctly, it's all part of the corn snake package. Otherwise she must be prepared to drive you to the local pet store to buy fresh food for the snake on the day you need it.

My mom didn't want them in the house either.
But then she saw what a pain in the ass it was going to be for constantly having to go to the petstore every time I was gonna feed.

If you're really dedicated to having the snake and you aren't allowed to get your own freezer then start going to the petstore every feeding day. I'm sure eventually your mother will cave, I didn't even have to start doing it before my mom caved.

Now I just keep it in the outside freezer in a opaque 12cup container so it doesn't take up a lot of room (you'd be suprised how many meece you can cram into this) and just wrote snake only on it.

Im mom and MY FAMILY doesnt want the mice in the freezer ..hehe!! so how bout a ziploc baggie put inside a brown paper bag rolled up stuffed in the back..you see I tell them.".you will look at all the ground chuck.skinned chicken breast and fishy stuff .but a whole mouse is a problem?? " Its not like they will start running around in there . foods food we all eat different things in different ways and noone is afraid of frozen food. So just tell her its no different than having BIL JAC dog food in there. It just snake food..good luck !!!

I don't know.
I guess I'm just going to see what I'm going to have to do.

How is much does it generally cost per feeding?
I can probably get a ride down to Petsmart every few days. :]

well at the place i get mice. its like 1.59 for any size. its over priced though. then again there another place i know its 90 cents for a mouse. Petsmart might cost a bit more since they are sold as "pets".

:eek1: They sell frozen mice as pets?
I'm pretty sure Petsmart has frozen mice, Petco does. Just ask a store clerk, they'll either get them from the back or there will be a freezer in the store that you can just take them from. And I agree with everyone that's said mice are just like any other frozen meat you'd keep in your freezer. But if it's that big of a problem, buy a mini fridge/freezer or put them in a solid colored tub.

Ive never seen petsmart selling frozen mice.. ever.

haha if your mom thinks mice are bad in the freezer. How about guinea pigs and rabbits! haha :grin01:

I usually keep my frozen feeders in a non see through ice cream type container.... well... I change out my containers to a little bigger one once.. forgot to mark it as snake food... mom wasnt too happy finding That kind of ice cream when she came to visit LOL she screamed and frozen mice went everywhere!! hehe I about died laughing :D Good thing mom is over that now and has snakes of her own LOL was still funny though, I will never forget it LOL

:dunce: I have an excuse, I've never been to Petsmart!

Well, if there's a Petco nearby I know they have frozen mice! Then there's always ordering online. Well, if your mom gets over the fact that there'll be a little more frozen meat in the freezer then there was before...

You can get snake 'steak sausages' if she definately wont change her mind. Im not sure what people think of them, but Ive seen them in Kathy Loves Corn Snake manual, so they cant be that bad!

Yeah despite Kathy having a peice on them, and actually having discussed it with her (I made a topic about it once) they seem to be made of unabtainium :grin01:
I was also discussing it as an option with my mother before I got my snake, but it seemed even more likely that a sausage in the freezer spelled more trouble for family.

lol! The snake sausages do look a bit too much like li'l smokies... I've never seen one of those sausages in person though, just the picture in Kathy's book.
I have so many feeders in my freezer they are impossible to ignore, like the elephant in the room. I do double bag the ones currently not in use with white plastic grocery bags so it's a bit harder to tell what's in them.

I heard the snake sausages are actually bad for the snakes health and actually killed some. :shrugs:
I think....

Well in Kathy's research 75% of the snakes took them, though I don't ever recall Kathy saying anything bad happened to those snakes she did the research on.
