World's Tallest Midget
MegF has donated her wonderful amel to my classroom, and he arrived today via FedEx (much to my students' amazement).

My big cage (donated by a 7th grader):

That's a 12inch ruler sitting on the front of the door.

*for some reason these aren't showing up when I "preview the post"...hope I get it right!

Give me a break! It seems as if it takes forever to load, and then *poof* no pictures. Even when I tested a URL it doesn't load up.

I've got pictures. You snake is the only one I know with a split level condo. He should feel at home there. Nice job.

Good lord, they call this Broadband!:bang:

If you guys can see them, I'll post more pics, but I can't even load up my photobucket page right now! :shrugs:

Well, don't forget about this thread...I'll try agian later. WHEN THINGS SUCK LESS!

Wow, now that's a cage!! He's one lucky snake ;) I want one of those 7th graders to donate me one just like it :)

And that's no condo... that's a dang two story mansion :)

normal cage size for european standarts :p but for american standarts its really great ;)

dont forget to add some hides.. and some more branches to climb would be useful (because its nonsense to have a high cage with a big empty space...)

Okay, I'm back up and running.

And the big boy:

I am told he is over 700 grams and about 52" long!

I'm so glad you like him and that he likes his new digs!! Enjoy him as much as I have over the years. And yes, he's almost 700 grams. I think the last weight on him was 688 or something like that. You have the records :)

Wow, he must think he's gone to heaven! And look at him climb!! What a gorgeous snake! Your students must be going crazy over him. What a great retirement for him. What's the big guy's name? I bet your students would like to see that snake measureing software at work.

Nanci

His name is C.S. My husband and I named him that short for Christmas Snake (ironically, short for cornsnake as well) as we purchased him a couple of weeks before Christmas at the Pamona Reptile Show. Sorry Jade....I figured I'd answer that for ya! I didn't know if I had put what C.S. stood for in the records or not. I measured him not long ago with the snake measuring tool, but it might be a cool class project for the kids.

No worries! Yeah, I did a littel snooping into what C.S. meant. :grin01:

I also have his records at school, since that is where he'll be most of the time.

My kids are going CRAZY over him!!! You should see them scramble over each other just to get a peek to to touch him. It also helps that the kids who are squealers realize that snakes are not slimy. C.S. has actually swayed one of our secretaries into liking snakes "a little bit." He just may turn into the ambassador for snakes in my school (he is the first and only snake in the building...on purpose anyway).

For those of you who did read up on my other thread, this cage was originally an iguana cage and was donated by a student. I looked into iguanas and realized (through many people on this board) that it would NOT be the right pet for my room. Meg kindly jumped in and offered C.S. to my room, and I am so glad she did! This guy is sooo much cooler than anything else I could have put in it (he is actually nudging my two younger corns aside a bit).

Oh, and I'm not sure if the pictures show it, but he actually has 3 hides right now: two make-shift ones (each on a different level) because I had not idea how big he'd be, and a built in shelf he has already staked out on the lower level.

i second that! lol
thats a great setup and a lucky snake, i like the pegs on the wall for him to enjoy good idea :)

He likes the pegs as well. He spent a good amount of time exploring what the cage had to offer...and possibly looking for escape routes!

The kid who gave me the cage is an absolute gem. I have dubbed him my "Cage King" because when another teacher needed to get rid of a hamster called "Bite," this boy provided a better 3-story critter-trail cage he had "lying about." Part of me wants to go to his house and see what other goodies are there and not being used! :grin01:

I would probably put water on each level too so that he can find it no matter where he is. I used to use a hollow bottomed dog bowl. He likes to curl up underneath them...although he barely fit under the one he had. It just thrills me that the kids like him so much....and even the secretary!

Can I just ask-how do you keep the cage warm? Is the ambient temperature high enough? Because with a mesh front I'd think the temperature would drop... :shrugs:

Anyway, great looking setup! Nice animal as well.

There is a UTH on the second floor with a ceramic tile on top of it. I also have basking lights at the very top on a dimmer so that they don't get too hot, but can still help warm up the tank if needed. (I haven't had to turned these on yet).

Isn't the screen on the door the same as having a screen on the top (as is the case with my tank at home)?

Ah, ok. My main concern was that I couldn't see any heating mechanisms in there. And yes the mesh is probably the same as having a mesh top on a normal viv, but as I don't have any viv's with mesh tops, that slipped my mind. Thanks for clearing that up. :)

How to heat was something I thought of for awhile...especially since I have never heated a wooden-floor viv! A few members here offered great advice for what to do, and it is working beautifully. I still have a few things to do to the cage before I can turn on the lights, but for now it's working out.
