One of my 5th graders just asked me this and I didn't have an answer so I thought I'd post here. Do snakes have a sense of taste?
When the snake is "tasting" its environment, it can follow a scent trail easily because the forked tongue can determine which direction has the highest concentration of scent.
When horses (or any animal- cats, taiprs, moose- whatever) exhibit the "flehmen response" they are exposing the Jacobsen's organ and drawing pheremones and other scents over it.
Ohhh,:shrugs: I thought it was just sticking its nose up at me.
It's most often associated with smelling urine to determine if a female is in estrus. Females occasionally exhibit the behaviour, too.
