If the target for the photo would have been the Butter Motleys, the contrast balance would have been different. Then the Caramel Motleys would have been too dark.
Dynamic range (lightness to darkness) has always been a problem in photography. The typical photograph averages the frame out to be 18 percent gray to try to strike a reasonable balance. When you use a weighted center to set exposure, it uses that small area for the averaging. So you need to make a tradeoff when you have both very light and very dark subjects in the same frame.
Since I was trying to take photos of the Caramel Motleys, I had to choose the exposure that would work best for them.
