Cat attack

I was playing with my snake and my cat jumped up and bit him. It broke a scale and made a puncture mark no blood though. What should I do? :sobstory:

It doesn't sound too bad, if the snake seems ok other than the broken scale I think it will fix itself after a few sheds. If it was really bad I' d clean it with a 1/2 water, 1/2 hydrogen peroxide mixture with a little betadine added and use neosporin (the antibacterial cream for people) to treat it afterwards. That's what it says in corn snake manual, but I have yet to treat a bite injury since I don't feed live prey and my cat knows better. You might want to use the search function and look for advice that has been given on other posts. If you keep him on paper towels for a bit it will help to make the environment somewhat sterile while he heals.
Bad Kitty!

That's good advice Jen. Really watch the injury Rachel as cat's have a lot of bacteria in their mouths and puncture wounds become infected rapidly. Keeping the bite clean and using the neosporin should work well. I personally like to use chlorhexidrine or a betadine scrub instead of hydrogen peroxide, but the diluted mixture works well if you don't have the other. I would cleanse and use the neosporin on the wound daily for a couple of days until you're sure that it's healing and not getting infected. Snakes have pretty tough hides and heal quickly as a rule.

thanks for your input. :wavey: I've tried what you said. He's on paper towels and I used Neosopren on his cut. Here's a picture if it helps.

From what I can see in the picture it doesn't look to bad. Mostly superficial damage to the scales. My friend's scrub python punctured a hole thru his skin on a palm tree we were photographing him on, and he did just fine. By his next shed, the injury was gone.

If you are unable to get any of that stuff, salty water worked fine for me when my cat got one of my snakes.

Salt water? Ouch!!! :sidestep:

ouch!

aww... that scares me soo much! I have a cat and hes so fascinated by the snake, even though i wont take my snake out when the cat is in my bedroom, it still makes me nervous! good luck getting your snake back to full recovery!! :)

I have been worried about this same thing- the female cat in our house has no front claws so her interest does not pique me, but the male is quite agressive and has all his pokers.

I often wonder if I should barricade my vivs, but I am trusting them thus far, and in addition to verbal reprimands I toss them out at the first sign of overly agressive interest [and since my bedroom has 80 degree temps PLUS a down comforter they really notice when they are being punished!]

Here's thoughts for a quick recovery- please do keep us informed ;]

Any time we have our snake out of her viv, we put our cats in the bedroom and close the door. They usually snuggle up for a nap and we're sure that we don't have any unwanted interaction between.

I hope your snake heals up well! =)
