Changing substrate

My first post...

Those of you who use Aspen for substrate, how often do you change the whole thing out? I am sure you spot clean, right? I am thinking of changing to Aspen and I knew this was the place to go for wisdom.

Thanks,

Knox

It depends. With hatchlings maybe once every two months, older every month. Of course this depends on the spot cleaning and the poo that your snakes leave you as presents.

Hi Knox :wavey: Welcome!!
I usually change the aspen when it's soiled. I remove the poo 'clumps' :eek1: about every 5-7 days at feeding time. I also take out any that looks dirty from water soaking, etc. It's not a 'full change' because I don't dump the clean stuff out--just add to it--usually on feed days.
I do complete changes about every 2-3 months--dump everything and wash out their tubs.
Hope this helps?

Hi Knox,

You're on the Repticzone board as well, right?

I also use aspen and spot clean daily (well only when needed, but I check daily). I only clean the whole tank every 3 months or so, as I spot clean quite thoroughly.

Jessica :)

Jessica,

Yep, that's me...

Thanks for the replies, guys. I have been using indoor/outdoor carpet for my corn and king, but the weekly cleaning with the bleach solution (don't worry, it's only 5% and I rinse it very well) is getting to be a little frustrating.

Sounds like Aspen might be a little more convenient - and with as little maintenance as you confirmed - isn't that expensive anyway.

Thank you all again, and for the "welcome" as well.

Thank you Knox. I hope they are ok - I don't feel experienced enough to know! They're not moldy at least, but I get a bit freaked out by reading the eggs section on here and hearing about people's egg problems and abnormalities in the babies. Will just have to wait and see!

Is this the kind of aspen bedding you are using? Just curious as to what to picture when aspen is talked about...

as or right now I use reptibark, and I'm starting to hate it...its too hard to find soiled areas and I need to find a change asap.

Yup. I personally used aspen chips, but that's simply because Petco doesn't carry shredded aspen and Petsmart is too far away. Either one works well.
