Chickens

"Ameraucana" Chickens https://www.google.com/search?hl=en...urce=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=Aj30UK7sOoi9qQGtnICACQ

"Araucana" Chickens (I used to raise and show these as well. Rump-less tuffed are very hard to breed because of birth defects.) http://www.araucanas.co.uk/ (has some interesting info on the breed.

When we hatched out the RIR/La fletche crosses, we also had some RIR/Ameracauna crosses that laid olive green eggs.

If you can't tell, my love for playing with genetics started with chickens...

Oh, another thing that I found out was to breed my naked necks into my meat bird stock. cuts the feathers down when it comes time for the freezer/less work. Plus they look awesome!

Outcast,
To be honest, I don't like the look of the naked necks. I do keep a few turkey, ducks, etc. but my chickens are mostly for eggs. If its been awhile since you kept chickens and you like dark brown eggs the French Black Copper Marans with feathered feet... those are to die for in my opinion. I paid an arm and a leg for them when I got my first Frenchies, but since then they have come down into the affordable range. I also feel your pain on not being able to have so many animals while in the service. There is simply nothing like having your own eggs every morning and having your birds free range. With that being said... I thought I had a lot with numbers ranging from 100-130 at any given time. 350+ though.... you must have been swimming in the eggs.

Carpe,
We were. In fact, my father used to take about 6 dozen a week to work to sell to his co-workers. And, that wasn't even all of them that we would harvest, we would constantly see new chickens in out at the barn from a hen setting on a nest that we couldn't find or get too. With the exception of our expensive show chickens, they were all free range. So the eggs were fantastic and fresh.

I think I have my wife convinced to get a small "flock" of about 6 hens. I plan on getting a couple of Cochins, Ameracaunas, and Marans. And I may up it to some white egg layers as well (I am thinking white faced black spanish, used to love the pair I hatched out), get a nice variety of colors.
