WARNING: I can be.....
I have a male butter corn snake that is infertile. Most people I talk to dont want him for this reason. He is Extremely sweet and holdable.
Someone mentioned contacting the school to see if he could be the class pet. Would this be good for him? I want to make sure he is taken care of. I dont want anything bad to happen to him.
Has anyone ever gave thier snake to the school? What would be the outcome if.. they dont want him anymore? Do you think I could keep him during the summer and return him during school year?
 
If I were finished with school and a teacher, I would love to take him as a classroom pet. I plan on having a couple different types of reptiles in my classroom when I start teaching. I think he would be a great pet for someone's classroom.
I would look for a teacher that you know, or that family members may know. That way you can keep in touch with them and see how they want to do the summer/school year thing. And, if they were to ever want to get rid of it, they could always give it back to you.
 
I've been loaning one of my very handleable corns, Kitty, to my local 4-8th grade science class and I come in and feed him as well as take him home during vacations. Sometimes teachers just keep the animal as a pet and take them home on the vacations, but this particular teacher's husband is so afraid of snakes. Anyway, I came and gave a talk about cornsnakes and the proper way to handle them, etc so the classroom was educated before I left him there. It was a good experience for both kids and snakes, I thought.
 
I think it's a great idea PROVIDED he's taken care of. Make sure to drill the teacher about their care, see the set up for yourself to make sure it's safe/secure. Also make sure they'll feed it frozen/thawed or prekilled if that's what you feed. I know I'd be angry if I gave my snake to someone and they started to feed it live for no good reason.
 
Back when I was in 7th grade, my teacher had 2 corn snakes one was an amel and the other one was a normal. They were such great class pets. Thats when I fell in love with corn snakes. She was very strict to thoes who came near the snake, she told them they couldent tap the glass and they could only hold her whenever she was in sight. Every summer, she lets two kids from her class to take one the snake home with them over the summer. (her husband doesnt like snakes). She would only give let the most well behaved kids take them home, because they seemed more responsible and she gave them this huge list of things they had to do.
I say it would be a great idea to have a class pet. I do say, just keep a close eye on it if you do. And to tell the truth. If I was the teacher, I would never let any kid take it home over the summer. Just saying :D . But I say you go for it.
 
I'm a Pre-K teacher and have a corn snake in my classroom. The children adore her and are very good with her. I spend a lot of time teaching the proper way to care for her, and they only handle her when I take her out. (Her cage is locked). They have to wash their hands before and after petting or holding her. Best class pet ever in my opinion!
