Cleaning Silk Plants

I Have silk plants that were once used in a freshwater tank that i set up. I know you cant boil or bake them or they will melt but do you think letting them sit in scalding water for a half hour then rinsing them off really well will be alright? I spent a fortune on them and they are really pretty and i know Soloman would love them because they are quite large.

I don't see why you couldn't wash them in a mild soap and water, or better yet mild bleach/water combination and then rinse well and let them sit for a while to really dry. The longer time will also help any bleach residue break down. I suppose you could also use a clorhexidine/water bath as well. That isn't toxic and kills most everything.

Make sure the plants don't have a bleach smell when your done. I read in another thread to lick them and if you don't taste the chemicals its safe. That thread was about poly abd stain for a custom cage but it might work. Just a suggestion.

lick it eh? hmmmmm ill make sure i start cleaning and taste testing my silk plants with bleach when i have a death wish

Maybe he's taste tested too many? That would explain a lot. :grin01:

Bleach isn't like those paint chips that Mom told you to stop eating...

r_a,

You asked when you've "given bad advice". Suggesting that someone potentially poison themselves with an overdose of sodium hypochlorite by testing for its presence with a taste test, officially qualifies as bad advice.

Why don't you take a break from posting for a while. This course of action has been suggested numerous times by numerous members. Killing your animals is one thing, killing a person is in a whole different realm.........

Seriously, who in their right mind would take any advice that r_a has been spewing? Anyone with a frontal lobe would do further research on "advice" given in forums like this, and draw their own conclusions.

If they don't, well then, ah pity the foo.

regards,
jazz
