I have a large piece of wood that I got used from someone. It's one of those twisted pieces, similar to the malaysian drift I have for my fish aquarium.

Anyway, it has a funky smell. How can I clean it without destroying it? I tried washing it in hot water, hasn't made a difference.
 
I don't know if the same applies to driftwood as it does to wood from fruit trees, but I clean mine (the latter) by mixing in a very small amount of bleach. I wash down with a sponge and leave to dry before it goes back in the viv.
