Coccidia?

Sharon

Formerly Tsiriane
Soo my puppy's fecal results just came back and he has coccidia. I don't really know anything about it but I have asked my vet and I just wanted to see if any of you guys had any input on how to deal with it (yes, he is already getting medicine)

Thanks!
Sharon

There isn't a whole lot more you can do, except keep the area clean. With that, everything is going to take time. Also, it is contagious to other animals/dogs. So just be aware.

Give the meds a chance to work. It is very treatable!

Good Luck,

Wayne

I can tell you it is a horrible disease that me and my dog got it at the same time camping! The stupid things you do when you are yourng and stupid!!!!! It can be from dirty water, I am sure your vet told you that already! Keep the paper towels handy!

I didn't think the parasites carried by dogs were transmitted to humans? I'm referring to the above poster...

Sharon, I've heard of this in dogs, and my own dog is a carrier but it has no effect on him now. He's almost two. I'm assuming your little one is being treated with an anti-parasitic agent?

Yeah, I've read that dogs cannot give it to humans, and that puppies and kittens under 6 months are the most vulnerable. He barely has any symptoms, so I don't think he has it bad. I'm not sure what they are giving him yet, I can't remember the name and I can't pick it up until tomorrow. I just don't know what to use to clean my house. I have read 10% ammonia, bleach, boiling water, etc, but I don't know which one to believe.

Honestly its not a big deal as long as treatment is given! I wouldn't worry about it. Use normal cleaning products!

Ammonia is what kills it. It would be spread by his poop. So don't let him recycle that! (Some dogs do...)

Lol, I don't think he's into that yet. I will try the ammonia, thanks. What are the chances of this affecting my 2 and 6 year old cats?

We got a dog from a breeder once that ended up with it 2 days after being here. Constant smelly diarrhea and vommiting galore is what I remember but he did get better with the meds and our other dog was treated as a precaution because it can be deadly.

Phin's only symptom is very slightly loose stool, so I'm hoping he won't get any worse and into a life threatening stage.
