Comercialization of Corn Snakes in Texas Banned

LOL "Rub her feet" --- for sure! That would be my fav!
Thanks for staying on top of this issue. I was hoping to move to TX in the near future but wow .... if that stands, I may have to rethink my move.

Thanks for keeping up with this KJ. I will definitely be watching this thread and also talking with the few Game warden friends that I have to keep abrest of this situation. Maybe if more of us send questioning emails to them things will move more quickly....just a thought.

Nothing in the regs can change until the next committee meeting, and that date can't be moved. The guys I know to talk to about this issue are all saying it was a mistake, and they are planning to TRY and take corrective measures at the next meeting. I'm hoping those measures are to just wipe out off these two species from the black list - or get rid of the black list all together!

I wish deer mice would come off the list, but I don't think that is happening!

From what I hear in MN Deer Mice are also Black listed as well. Due to getting loose and mixing with the local rodent populations. But a lot has to do with the fear of Monkey Pox as well.

But you know, If I lived in Texas I could keep a Texas Indigo :grin01:

:dancer:
I so glad that they have backpedaled on the Cornsnake issue but has anyone heard anything about the mouse problem? It doesn't do me any good if they shut Big Cheese Factory down, wouldn't be able to feed my snakes.
Thanks

Actually, guys, TPWD has done something other than what was planned in the past before. (The entire black list is proof!) Until the commission ACTUALLY makes a ruling, I don't believe we should all completely relax or ignorantly reduce our level of vigilance. Oh, for the record, I'm 99.99% believe this will be corrected. I'm still saving that LAST bit until it is corrected in the PROPER way. I'm worried they'll make some worse mistake when they correct this one. Accidentally or not, of course.

Two things really scare me: (1) when was the public actually allowed to comment on the black list? NOBODY has come up and said they had the opportunity, and the references to an advisory committee that was actually disbanded YEARS ago is ludicrous. (2) How can this LARGE of a mistake happen when our non-game TPWD "specialists" reviewed the list twice before going to the commission? I feel a little cheated. Sure, it was an accident. Sure, we seem to have been able to start the process of correction on it THIS time. Sure, the law making road collecting was an ACCIDENT, too. Riiigggghhhhhttttt. Until the commission rules, it is still the law. My source tells me this issue is not even ON the agenda for the next commission meeting YET. (Does that concern anyone?)

Accident or not, these cases of gross "mistakes" in ANY .gov agency ANYWHERE is not tolerable. I'm sorry, but they have no penalty for making a bad regulation, but we (the ones living under it) are the ones that suffer: Georgia's herp laws, our laws saying roads are wildlife sanctuaries, etc. There are too many darn cases!

Actually, that is correct - but there are some stipulations on this one. Indigos are listed as T&E and protected from collection and ALL commercial activity by a different set of laws.

Tried to bring in local news stations to help the fight

I have emailed 4 of the local (DFW) news stations to let them know about the ban in Texas. I actually talked with someone from CW33 and he said that they haven't heard about this. He also thought this wasn't right what was happening and how fast. He said they will try to air it on Monday because the TP &WD won't comment on the weekend. I believe that we need to get this out there and let the entire public know. That way more people will be contacting the officials and perhaps we can save our right to own our pets. This really should have been done earlier might have helped more since the date is so close.

Help

So I also tried to call other tv stations in other areas like Houston, Waco, and Austin. I actually talked with Austin (25?) but she wasn't all that concerned and actually seemed annoyed that I was calling from out of her local area. I'm sick with strep throat and I'm trying to talk with her telling her this isn't a DFW problem but actually a state wide issue. She told me to email the station and that they might look into it.
So Please help by contacting your local news teams and asking them for help. They also like it if you can tell them a large business in the area that might be affected by the blacklist.

Thanks

Newest Information....

.......time is winding down. Maybe KJUN knows some more on this than what I found. Just thought I would share what I came across tonight.

Texans Have One Last Chance on Snake Law

Texans have a final opportunity to have a say in the way that the laws approved under HB 12 regulating the ownership of large constrictors and non-native venomous snakes will be implemented.

While it is too late to stop the law from going into effect, reptile owners and businesses still have one last chance to make their voice heard in how the law is enforced. The public comment period ends Thursday at 9:00am January 24th CST.

The full text of the proposed law and an easy to use submission form for your comments are available online at the Texas Parks & Wildlife web site.

Ironically, I just sent an email (to the head of enforcement and the head of nongame) asking a simple set of questions about 16 hours ago. :)

Yes, I found the info sent by the NARBC show very confusing as to whether corns are allowed. I do not plan to buy a multi hundred dollar license either - I don't make enough in a weekend to justify it. I need to decide if I will bother to go at all, or just send hubby with drygoods.

Government - our tax dollars at work!

From the information I've read, it appears the new Texas law [for permits]only applies to non-indigenous venomous snakes and 5 types of [large] constrictors.

No, that's two different sets of laws. One is a permit for selling natives and the other is a permit for possessing exotic venomous and the "big 5."

I am glad someone is trying to do something about this... I think it's sad that more people don't try. If something as innocent as a pet mouse can be banned, why should ANY pet owner believe their breed/species is safe from the goverment??

That means that the .gov does WORK, and I disagree with that statement....lol.

Cornsnakes are not native to Texas, so you can sell them in Texas w/o a permit. That illegal GLITCH preventing their sell has, we have been told, been corrected by TPWD. I'd sell corns w/o a permit in Texas. (I do have a permit, though.)

The NARBC mail-out made turtles sound legal to sell in Texas, but that is apparently NOT true for almost all of the native ones!!!

...because it isn't. :( Our legislatures think they can vote away ANY of our freedoms because 51% of them like the idea. That's not true in a free society...and England learned that a couple of hundred years ago.......
