Compress pics?

I'm trying to figure out how the heck you guys get such nice photos to upload on here with the restrictions on size???

My cell phone isn't a fancy one and I keep having to resize the images to upload them. I am going to try with my wife's nice camera here soon when I start my progression thread next week (3 month, will track again at 6, 9 and one year) and I want to be able to post the nicer images with detail.

Any tips on what common programs to use after uploading my pc to get them ready to bring into the forum here? Should I resize, compress or do something else altogether to get them ready?

Thanks all!

I upload them to photobucket and it resizes them for me when I add them to the thread. Or else I would have some HUGE pictures with my D7000

Thanks all. I have been using MS Office 2010 for editing images lately, but want to look into a more in depth program with more features. I will definitely try some of the suggested techniques and software items you all discuss above. I appreciate the feedback.

Picasa is a pretty great free program by google. It's easy to use, organizes, and does basic edits.

I use PhotoShop as well, but find myself using Picasa for the basics.
