condensation problem!

i recently purchased a corn snake 3 days ago and i love that thing! on my thermometer it says that the temp is 78 degrees and the humidity is at 30%, eventhough i have lots of condensation in the tank. everything is wet, and the whole tank is foggy. i would suspect to get a reading like at least 80% with all that condensation and my bedding of newspaper all wet. whats goin on here?? my thermometer is brand new. i just bought it yesterday at walmart. it is a acu-rite. oh yah..... the little probe is just under the bedding on the warmer side of the tank.

If you have condensation in the tank, the humidity is way too high. Corn snakes don't need a tremendous amount of humidity. And what's the source of the water vapor--the water dish, or are you misting the tank? What's the humidity in your house? What kind of hygrometer are you using? Get a digital one so you can get an accurate reading--I've never had luck getting a precise reading from an analog hygrometer, even the adjustable ones.

You also need to give us more information on your setup: size of tank? screen top? heat source?

The water dish isn't over the heat mat is it (or at the warm end if you are using an alternative heating method)? Seems to be alot of mositure. Maybe you should try drilling more holes or getting a mesh lid. Your hydrometer has to be wrong at 30%....

Definately needs more ventilation!

does the display read humidity from the probe? or is the sensor on the display.... If so the display needs to be in the tank.... perhaps the problem?....

Hi Chris, sorry to hear you're having problems already.

This is very often easily resolved, though, simply by moving the water bowl further toward the 'cold' side of the viv. I would double-check the temps with a 'probe' thermometer if I were you, because it could be that it is too hot; as you've noticed, it clearly isn't reading the humidity %age correct.

Let us know how you get on.
