Condiment cup size

Jenstar

IN OVER MY HEAD ;)
What size condiment cups do you use in your deli cups? I'd like to glue them in so that I can slip a second cup inside it to make water changes easier. Any ideas are more than welcome, this is the first year I will hopefully have some eggs hatch so I have lots to learn. :)

Mine are 2.5 oz cups I got atwalmart. They are stainless steel. I was thinking of gluing in bottom ones like you mention, would make it hard for them to spill and easy to clean and get fresh water.

I'm currently at day 37 so I need to get a move on finishing my hatchling setups. I am putting them in shoebox sized tubs so they have pleanty of room to grow. I only have one home lined up for sure. No biggie, if I have to I can take them to a swap in October to offer the masses, and if I still have any there is a huge swap every June. Honestly I will be happy if I get a 1.1 and one whatever, I want to keep 1.1 and the person lined up for one really did not say if they want male or female.

A Deli cup is way to small for a snake to live in. They should only be used when shipping them. If you don't have the room to put them in a shoe box or build a proper rack with enough room, you shouldn't breed them!

I bought mine from a restaurant supply company. I use the Solo B200 2 oz. condiment cups. They cost me $5.00 for 250. I thought about glueing them down, but in the long run, I think it makes clean up a little more difficult if the hatchling defecates on the cup.

Jen, I use ones that are either 3/4 or 1 oz, I don't recall (leaning toward 3/4 oz). The 2 oz ones are too big for the deli cups I use, unless a notch is cut to allow access. For the sandwich containers that I use for keepers (before they get moved to shoe boxes, which happens once they are reliable feeders), I use the 2 oz cups.

Thankyou for your opinion. :)

I was thinking about using sandwich containers so I could use bigger cups. I've still got a month to make my final decision.

I use the solo 2oz cups (like they use for jello shots in a bar). My babies get the entree/sandwich size gladware containers and I can throw out the cup and get a new one every 5-7 days as I feed. I get the water cups at a restaurant store by the case. 2500 to a case for 25.00 plus tax. I use about 6 cases a season on average. I kept 50 babies back last year and so the last case of cups have lasted me for months with only using a sleeve a month. They do not tip easily and I have good results. I do move to a deli cup for shipping purposes. Babies can stay in these containers until about a year old then I move them to my Vision rack systems.
The gladware containers I use run about $2 for 5 of them, but they are reusable time and time again. That makes it nice. they also store easily.
Hope this helps.

Very helpful. Thankyou.

i staple one of the smaller size condiment cups to the side then sit another in it, makes changing a breeze.

I use the 2 oz portion cups, picked up by the case at Sam's Club. You do need to watch this size with certain brands of sandwich containers as they have been making the containers shorter and I've had to throw some out as the hatchlings were unable to get into them to even get a drink.

albinoscooby: As far as Deli cups go, MOST breeders recomend they start out in them for a more secure feeling. It is even in Kathy's book. Since it is common practice, I do
not see anyone beeing a bad snake person for doing it.

Susan: That is why I will be using the shoeboxes, I know they are tall enough.
That and I already have them lol! I don't want to waste any money if I can help it.
No worries on the snakes feeling they have too much room at the start. I am
working on a temporary devider for each shoebox to make it smaller length wise.
The devider to be moved over a little each time they successfully eat or shed for me
while I have them. That is until it reaches the other wall or they are sold. They will be
on paper towels with a tp roll cut in half for hides to start. I am trying to decide if I
want to figure out how to block one end of the hide or leave it open. I am not sure yet.

I use the 2oz cups in my custom built hatchling racks....

BUT...if you were going with deli containers....I'd order some of Rich Z's PVC deli caps....they are already predrilled so the cannot tip in an 8oz container but the snakes can drink no problem. They can be dumped in bleach to clean and they will last forever.

FYI....If my sandwich containers for the hatchling racks weren't quite as tall as they are and thus allow the Rich Z caps to tip....I would have bought him out of everything he had left!

Scott, that is a great idea. The lower ones would tip over less! I'll have to look into that.

Thanks Jen for asking, this has been on my mind as well.

I have my hatchlings in a shoebox size sterilite containers on a rack I build designed to hold them. I started using 2 oz solo plastic containers for water, but found that they were tipped over by these little ones very easily. Othe other issue, mentioned previously was ease of cleaning the cups and I have a few that like to poop in the water. Ugh!

Over the weekend, I purchased some magnets at the craft store. I hot glued a magnet to one side of the deli cup. A second magnet is used on the outside of the container to keep the deli cup in place. On the hatchlings it has worked out well. I am cleaning tubs because they defecated, not because their bedding is wet from water. The magnets aren't super strength (but I'd like to find some stronger ones and do something similar for the yearlings.)

Just my 2 cents.

What I do for my 1-2 year olds is use the smallest of the square plastic superpet brand bowls. They allow me to slip a solo container in them for ease of cleaning purposes. They rarely get tipped and for snakes that like to tip dishes I use the small ramikins from the resturant store again with the liner in it as it fits perfectly. The raamikins run about $15 a dozen but last forever. The surperpet plastic bowls from pet-co are about $1 each. I have about 200 total.
I used to use shoe boxes from sterlite but found some babies are able to escape from them and it was always the babies I wanted to keep the most.
That is why i made the switch.

Can anyone take a photo. DUH! I am such a blonde! I honestly need to see what it looks like. I have only 6 eggs due in a few wks. I'm keeping all the babies so I would like to see the bigger size set up for my guys.
Thanks a bunch I srsly appreciate it. :D
