It's Jager time!
I don't disagree with rehoming animals when you have justified and valid reasons (that have already been mentioned in the thread). However I think it matters more where the snakes go rather than the reasoning behind it...
I absolutely hate how reptiles are like the ultimate disposable pet. I made a decision not too long ago that whatever comes into my house doesn't leave unless I really cannot care for that animal in the best way possible. I like to think of keeping animals as a lifetime commitment to them and me. I need to think seriously hard before I buy something. I need to make sure I want to look after that particular animal for it's entire life.
I recently had the chance to purchase a pair of normal corns het for my favorite corn in the world. But I dislike normals and I didn't particuarly want to look at normals for the next 10+ years, so I passed on that ridiculous good opportunity. I could have produced thousands of pounds worth of corns from those two, but at the end of the day, the parents were still normals and would be taking up valuable space.
I am guilty of selling my first ever snakes, and many of those purchased within my first few months of keeping reptiles. That was a long time ago, and I regret it. It was for the best at the time... So I understand and appreciate life happens and sometimes these kinds of decisions are not debatable.
Now I am pretty much nearing my snakey limit, and I am perfectly happy with that. I own everything I REALLY wanted... Snakes I bought because I adored the look NOT because of what they can do for me. If my snakes breed, fabulous! If not then who cares? At least I can say I have picked out my ideal pets and It will be a joy to own them their entire lives...
Frequent buying and selling is a beginners curse IMO, and many snakes often pass through our hands in the first few years of keeping exotics. However I feel this is sometimes necessary in order to find out exactly what we want to focus on in regards to the hobby. I have found my niche, I'm a mad boa lady at heart. I cannot fathom parting with any of my boids, for any reason whatsoever.
