Corn Charts

I bought my corn from a petshop in the UK and they gave me my snakes entire eating/shedding record (as i bought it as a 3-4 month old hatchling).

I was able to guestimate its age by its first pinky and knew when to expect his next shed. Another plus to this was i could see just how healthy the corns in the shop were, and pick one that had never missed a meal.

I thought this was a wicked idea of something to get when buying your corn. I have kept its eating/shedding chart upto date and now have a whole year of my corns life recorded.

Is this a common thing? to get/keep these sorts of charts? anyone else do this too? or do i just have too much time on my hands? :)

I keep records, yeah, but when I bought Ishy from PetCo, she didn't come with any charts.

Stuff For You To Try!

You'd go crazy with that Herp Care software...

Only one of my snakes came from the previous owner with a feeding record, but now I keep feeding, shedding, weight, and length records on Herp Care.

This is really cool, too: (snake measurer- it's so accurate and fun!)

Just make sure you start out with a small enough picture- I use something like 800x600.

I've started putting a tape measure on a dinner plate, then setting the snake on the plate and quickly snapping a picture. Easier than just corralling them on the floor.

I use the Herp Care software that Nanci posted. It works great and does very detailed priting when you need to send off babys.

I just buy a notebook from the dollar store for each animal. I then record as they are eating. I also note shed dates and how they fed. On the green tree pythons I also record defication as they go infrequently. All my babies are sold with complete feed/shed records.

I always write on the calendar when I feed who, and when someone goes blue then sheds. Back up for the software.

It's really nice when breeders keep records of when their snakes eat and shed, but a lot of times breeders simply don't have the time or don't think it's necessary. I know when i visited my local reptile show, a lot of the people selling corns simply tell you the snake has shed or eatten X amount of time, but they don't have exact records for you. And others bought them wholesale from other breeders, so they can't give you records.

Right now I only have 2 snakes and I keep records in an excel file for their feedings, sheds, and length.

(Ran across this again whle I was looking for links to more software)

Herp Care exports to Excel.

But it lost all my December records. It was a night that my laptop rebooted itself. Luckily, I had everything written on the calendar, but still...Why just December? I also had a weird screw up a couple months ago trying to add a new specimen, and lost all Maizey's and Choco's records for months. Prpobably user error that time. I don't exactly trust it now, though. Has anyone else ever had herp Care lose data?

Now I don't leave it open- I close it down after recording something.

That's why I use a notebook!! Can't lose data and as long as you keep the paperwork with the enclosure, you won't lose anything.

Well, I'm backing up everything on a calendar now, including weights.

I wish there was a Palm version of a herp record software...

I built a tracking system in Excel, and it's very easy for me to use (hey, I built it the way I wanted it). I periodically back it up elsewhere. I enter events on my log sheet for the year which feeds a stats sheet that calculates totals, etc.. Each year's stats sheet results are summarized in an overall stats sheet. I also keep other sheets, such as genetics, and breeding projects, etc..

Chart

I track my snakes in Excel as well. Here is a screenshot of mine, has basic info, and I put the date and action taken on what day etc, along with a current photo, each snake has their own worksheet. The tabs below coded by color (pink) for female, (blue) for male.

Works for me, I like it, I back it up onto a CD once a month, just in case (I started that after someone lost all her data on their computer :santa: )

I use Excel as well, for both my breeders/keepers & hatchlings I produce.

I had a discussion on Fauna about providing records to buyers at shows, and unless I have a laptop to print them out while at the show, it really is a waist of paper (if you consider the amount of hatchlings a breeder would bring to shows). However, another option would be to offer the records via email if the buyer wished to have them.

I keep records on everyone but only give my buyers the last feeding and last shed.

I use a piece of paper with each snake listed down the left and blanks listed across the top.

I write the date in the blanks and mark in the squares next to each snake with a -, +, or 0 depending on whether it refused, ate, or wasn't fed. I also write next to the symbol what the food was P=pinkie, PF=peach fuzzy, f=fuzzy H=hopper, W=weanling, A=adult, B=brained, S=scented. If I fed more than one prey, I will mark ++ or whatever is appropriate. There is room in each square to write shed or opaque or any other comments.

So it would kinda look like this:

11/10 11/17
06101 -P +P(s)

06102 +P +P

06103 +P +P
opaq shed

I do an Excel spreadsheet for all the snakes I'm keeping. Pretty simple, I list what the snake was offered and 'X' a designated column if it refused. I also have a column for shed, Nutribac/Vitamin and general comments. I weigh each at the end of each month and put it in the general comments. I also list when I do a complete substrate change since I suffer from CRS.

With hatchling I plan to move out, I put a post-it on each shoebox; I list meal and shed dates. All snakes are offered food on the same day. If they eat I date the post-it with a blue sharpie, if they refuse, I date it with a red sharpie.

Calander

I've been using an old fashioned day calendar on the wall for the last 6-7 months. I write a “M” if he ate a mouse (pinky of course.) I write a “W” if I changed his water. I also take note when he sheds. I also record when I fully change his substrate, but don’t note day-to-day spot cleans. This has been working so far – but id like something computerized. I guess Ill try out HCS. I want something that will record his length / weight and output it to a line chart. :) I guess excel will do that.
