Corn judging shows?

Just more of a curiosity. Dogs have shows, cats have shows, fish have shows, plants have shows. Pretty much if it's a hobby, people will find a way to turn it into a contest. With reptiles, as best I can tell, it's all fun and personal preference with a healthy dash of science.

Why is that?

Not knocking it! I'm sure some of the amazing genes discovered today are because there was no one standing around going "'Tessera' is just a really lousy normal stripe pattern, it'll never be worth anything." Just struck me as unusual! Like an animated Disney movie coming out without a toy line.

We did have a Corn Snake Show in the UK a few years ago. It was all pretty fraught. In order to judge morphs for "Best of Morph" and "Best of Show", standards for each morph had to be agreed first. Even that part was a nightmare, as you can imagine. After that, the organisation was a very difficult, eventually falling pretty much on one person who was driving the whole thing.

It was generally considered a success and a great PR exercise but it never happened again. Sadly there was a lot of unpleasant political and personal fallout, resulting (in part) in the organisation which spawned the show (The Corn Snake Fan Club), closing down. I've always rather suspected some covert stirring by AR people, but then I'm paranoid like that!

Boo. I'm sad that show ended up badly. I would LOVE to have a snake show!! I used to show chickens and that was sooo much fun.
I have thought about this alot too, but I thought it might be too hard to create a standard when there are so many variations to the morphs.

I think it would be a lot of fun! I agree that it would be hard to make a standard of what's desirable and what's not, considering that we only breed corn snakes for pleasure (not for working purposes like dogs, where form followed function).

I'd probably never 'show' any of my snakes, but I'd love to attend that sort of event.

No reason a new one can't be created. For starts we can get a Colorado test show planned. I'd help for sure.

Does the Rocky Mountain Reptile Expo still do things like "Best Gecko" and "Best Table" awards? You could talk to the person who runs the show about maybe starting something like that up. (They did those superlatives when I was there years ago.)

Be glad the world of snakes isn't as involved in showing like dogs cats etc. I raised and showed dogs for 10 years or so, it is SO political and people get so ugly with each other. It is just downright ridiculous the way people act when involved in that kind of thing. I couldn't do it. It came down to there being only 2 dog breeders/exhibitors in the US that I could actually say I trust. That's in the entire US!!!!!!!!!!!!! Too much lying/backstabbing etc goes on in the show world. It was definitely not my scene. I like the more relaxed atmosphere here :)

I think snake shows should be judged like any other beauty competition. You can't put standards on what is appealing but a group of people could reach a majority in various categories.
